You get a pap. However, if you are looking for something specific, you need to tell the doctor to look for it. The pap just shows if there is any abnormal looking cells (possible cancer)
You need to give a blood sample to test for AIDS.
And, the doctor's office is not required to call you and tell you if you have any STD's, you need to go back to the office and ask for your results. So, after your examination ask the nurse when you can come back for those results.

A nurse will take a swab like when you have a smear... if you think you may have contracted one you really should see someone... preferably a GUM clinic, they're much less embarrassing because everyone is in same boat... Remember never to be ashamed, someone can sleep with a 100 people and contract nothing, but you can sleep with one person and be unlucky, its just the way the cookie crumbles xx

Usually you would go to a GUM clinic and have internal swabs taken...its much like having a smear/pap test so they insert the piece of equiptment that opens you up slightly (cant remember what its called) and they take swabs that are then sent off to the lab for growth, although some of the results are ready that day...but you have to wait for most. If testing for HIV that involves a blood test. My local clinic takes your mobile number and asks your permission to text you the results...saves them coming in the post if you have others at home (i.e nosey parents who open your mail) Goodluck

The only way they can check for stds, it is either with a papsmear or bood tests.
You need to have both to make sure you dont have anything. You can only check chlamydia or gonorohea through the papsmear but any other std has to be through blood tests like hiv, aids, herpes, syphillis, etc

when you go to the ob/gyn for a pap smear is when they usually do it, u take off your pants and to sit on the table thing with ur feet in the lil feet holders so they can see inside ur vagina. they look in if u told them ur sexually active and if you are u should tell , they take a thing it looks like a big q-tip and swap it around in your vagina it doesn't hurt at all then they put it in a lil test thing and at the end of ur pap smear you'll know the results

Knickers down. Legs in styrups and the doc will take a couple of swabs to test for various things. They will most likely take blood and urine samples too
