I have type 1 (childhood and insulin dependent diabetes). I just switched to the insulin pump. My question is in the morning I have coffee with equal and cream. My blood glucose is hovering between 200-250. The rest of the day I am fine. Please give me some help regarding this. I do not want to give up coffee since I only drink 2 to 3 cups in the morning and it is one of the few foods/drinks I enjoy. All serious responses are welcome. Thank you

Additional Details
My BS upon rising is 110 usually never higher. I use coffee mate lite which have 2g carbs per serving. 0 sugars. I use equal. I always over estimate the carbs I have for breakfast since I know the coffee is a problem thus far. My HGA1C is 6.1 and has been for over 4 years. I use regular coffee. I take the BS 2 hours after the last cup and this morning it was 260. 2 hours later it was 154 and lunch I was back down to 88 where it has been all day.
Thanks everyone who has answered thus far - it will be tough picking a winner. :)

Hi, Nancy! Two things come to mind. You can try putting a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon in your coffee. Cinnamon is a glucose regulator, and might help take the edge off. Second, a short, gentle exercise routine in the morning before the coffee would probably be very effective. It sets the metabolism for the rest of the day. It might even get you awake enough to want to switch to decaf, which would get more blood and oxygen to your peripheral arteries about the time your blood sugar is now peaking. Best of luck.

hello, I am a mom of a 3 yr. old type one diabetic. He is on the pump as well. We found that his BGs have been much higher in the AM, so we just raised his basel rate a bit starting at 3am-10am. this helps to bring down the bg before he wakes up in the morning and starts eating breakfast. He is also on a little higher carb/insulin ratio for breakfast. until 10 am. He woke up this morning at 118. I would talk to you endo. and see what he/she thinks about changing you basel rate and carb ratio. that might help. but make sure you ask the doc. also, with changing the basel rate in the middle of the night, it would be helpful if your husband or somebody would set an alarm and check you about 5am. Just to be sure it was not too much of a change. You could sleep right into hypo. We set an alarm for us to check our son - sometimes every 2 1/2 hrs. when he has been unstable. It has saved his life. Just a couple of weeks ago, he was only 21. Thank God I checked!!! Also, with the coffee, which is a diuretic, will make you pee more, and especially with your bg's that high, you are probably really going. Be sure to drink plenty of water too. It sounds like a basel change will do the trick. call the doc. good luck!!!

This depends on the type of pump, and whether this is the reading you're getting when you awaken, or after you've had your coffee. If this is your fasting blood sugar, then you need to talk with your doctor about adjusting your insulin dose. If this is after ingesting the coffee and cream (this sounds high for just a bit of cream - Equal won't affect it of course), then presumably you'd need to adjust the insulin you take before breakfast, which also needs to be discussed with your doctor.

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed that my energy levels increased significantly and I felt more rested in the morning, my symptoms started going away.

I am very happy to tell you that I have been feeling better than I have felt in years and my doctor informed me that he will be taking me off my prescriptions if I keep this up.

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

Is your bg 200-250 prior to your coffee or later? If prior you need to work with your overnight basal rates to get yourself a little lower. You may need to raise it .1 units or so for a few hours prior to waking up. If it is after, do you bolus for the cream in the coffee? If you do maybe you need to use a little higher insulin/carb ratio in the morning.

My wife uses instant coffee. She only uses 1/2 a tee spoon of coffee and 1/2 a pack of equal and 1% milk instead of cream. As does my wife have diabetes. I am sorry that you have to go through life with such a problem. You must learn to control this. She has not yet learned to control hers. She was diagnosed in 1999.

I also take 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning and had high BG level. My first reaction was that my insulin dose was not proper and initially wanted to increase it myself but opted to see my endo first for peace of mind. Suggest you do the same.

Coffee with cream should not raise your blood sugar. Do you get an insulin shot on rising?

You will have to get your insulin dose corrected according to dietary habits. You may have to change the time of taking Coffee. If you read your blood sugar immediately after taking your coffee than it is normal. Check after 2hrs if it comes down to around
140mg/Dal than no need to consult any doc.

Some people believe that caffeine raises blood sugar. It raises mine. (Even decaf coffee contains some caffeine. The decaf coffees at Starbucks and similar coffee houses contain a lot of caffeine.)
