Homemade ice cream and cupcakes. Get friends to bring ice cream freezers and operate them. Cup cakes are easy and you can have several varieties. If you plan on feeding everyone I would suggest something like chili or stew + accompaniments (Bread sticks, rolls, croutons or whatever.) Since the party is after church people will probably be hungry. Another option is to go to a Shoney's or other establishment that has a party room and let them hassle with all the clean-up.

What about a Pirate party ?
Bread rolls , A haunch of beef or a ham , salads ,mustards
non alcoholic punch based on ginger ale
blindfold games ,tug of war with a rope for kids,
pin the parrot on the pirate etc
People can just wear a kerchief or striped t shirt , jeans, eye patch, captain hook plastic hook, costume shops have black blutac to give the effect of a missing tooth !!
Pirate wenches can wear a mob cap and full skirts, frills , corset tops etc
The whole thing has a dressup feel and can get gently wild even without alcohol !!!

How about doing a taco / nacho / burrito bar? You can get some crockpots and fill with cooked beef, pork and chicken (three different ones). And then you can have the following for toppings: Shredded Cheese Chopped Tomatoes & Lettuce Avocado / Guacamole Salsa (Pico Di Gallo, Mango, and Corn Salsa - just some suggestions - there's a bunch of others - easy and inexpensive to make from scratch) Black Onions Chopped Onions Sour Cream Nacho Cheese Sauce Corn Nibblets Corn and Flour Tortillas (and Corn Tortilla Chips for Nachos or just munching with Salsa) Black or Pinto Beans Sliced Lemons/Limes And whatever you like on your tacos, etc. Then sides of refried beans, spanish rice and green salad. This way, your guest can control the amount of food they want to eat and make their own the way they like them. You can decorate with Pinatas, colorful linens, Sambrios, Whole Chili Peppers, anything Mexican looking.... You can make Margaritas or just have pitchers of Sangria and Mexican Brand beers (Tecati, Duexecs (sp), Coronas, etc.) Easy to prepare especially when you are feeding 70 people. And I think this would be "manly" yet not too much food....and very reasonable to control costs on your party! Good luck.

I agree with mlrios 200. I had a friend whose husband was turning 40, and they held an "over-the-hill" surprise party where the wife dressed up like a widow!
