Dengue fever is carried by Aedes mosquitoes and is actually caused by one of four dengue viruses. The mosquitoes which transmit these dengue viruses are usually found in the tropical and subtropical zones of Africa, Southeast Asia and China, India, the Middle East, the Caribbean and Central and South America, Australia, and the South and Central Pacific. The viruses are classified as DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Once you have been infected with a certain strain of the dengue virus (and you live to tell about it), you cannot be infected by that same strain again.

"Dengue fever can be caused by any one of four types of dengue virus: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. You can be infected by at least two if not all four types at different times during your lifetime, but only once by the same type."
"You can get dengue virus infections from the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite infected humans, and later transmit infection to other people they bite. Two main species of mosquito, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, have been responsible for all cases of dengue transmitted in this country. Dengue is not contagious from person to person."

dengue virus... transmitted by a bite from ANOPHELES mosquito, a low-flying, day-biting mosquito...symptoms include protracting high-grade fever, " bone-breaking " chills, severe body malaise, treatment = supportive, fluids, antipyretics...
subset includes Dengue Hemorragic Fever =repeated exposure causes a severe immune response , aside from fever, chills and malaise, dengue virus attaches itself to the patients platelets ( needed for blood clotting ) and red blood cells, the bodys own immune response attacks the virus, unfortunately destroys the latelets and blood cells... when the blood cells and platelets are destroyed, bleeding from just about anywhere ( epistaxis, GI bleed, cranial bleed )... treatment is supportive , aggresive fluid therapy, paltelet concentrates, whole blood transfusion... very high mortality rate ( demographics usually children less than 12 year olds beacuse of relATIVELY SMALL blood volume compared to adults )... one of the more horrifying diseases ive seen in my 14 year carrer as a physician...
prevention = since anopheles mosquito prefers to breed in stagnant water, then a clean surrounding , free fro water stagnation is very important...
endemic to areas in south east asia ( warm , humid countries )
P.S. Aedes Aegpytii mosquito transmits malaria, Anopheles mosquito trasnmit the Dengue virus...
