Asians, Blacks, and Native Americans have a 3-6 times higher risk of developing diabetes as compared to caucasians. When Asians still ate primarily the traditional diet, high in vegetables and fish, and low in meats, fats and sugars, they enjoyed a relatively low rate. As the diets have changed, and people lived longer, they reached the ages where the problems occur. Filipinos have simply reached a point where they live long enough to develop the disease, and practice a diet that sets them up to develop it. Education and early treatment will do a lot to help the Philipine people control the rate.
