No YOU DID THE RIGHT THING. HE DEFINITELY NEEDED TO BE RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL, HE COULD HAVE GONE INTO DIABETIC SHOCK AND ENDED UP IN A COMA AND DIED. IF THIS EVER HAPPENS AGAIN AFTER YOU CALL 911 TRY TO GET HIM TO DRINK ORANGE JUICE, SOMETHING TO BRING HIS BLOOD SUGAR UP. I'M DIABETIC AND KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO BE CLOSE TO GOING INTO SHOCK. YOU CAN'T THINK, YOU BECOME DISORIENTATED, IT'S A REALLY AWFUL FEELING. THANK GOD YOU CAME HOME INSTEAD OF GOING TO A FRIENDS. YOUR A HERO!!!!! i BET YOUR PARENTS ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU.

Calling 911 was the best thing to do at that point. You really shouldn't try to give him anything by mouth, like orange juice, coke because of the possibilty of not being able to swallow. The ONLy thing you might have been able to give him until help got there would be instant glucose which just slides down your throat. But even that is only like 4 carbs and not going to raise it much. They also have glucogon shots that you mix then inject into a muscle but I do believe even that stuff says to get emergency help ASAP, though I haven't looked at any lately and could be wrong. You def did the right thing, because low blood sugars go bad a lot more quickly then high sugars do and time is really important there. I am sure they are both proud of you.

No at that stage it was best to call 911. You could have given him a hot can of coke (by that I mean room temperature) to get him stable until they got there but you did the right thing. You saved his live and you should be very proud of yourself.

No way. He was too far into his diabetic attack to be rescued with anything you could have done. You completely did the right thing. As someone who's had a couple of ambulance trips, I can tell you that you feel a bit silly for "causing such a fuss" but you realize soon enough that you needed proper help, so if your father is upset with you at all, don't worry, it won't last.

Not likely - you did the right thing. As a diabetic myself I know where your father was... and even with a direct shot to the liver he was low enough to be at risk of dying...
Thank the gods for people like you, who understand and do the right thing, right off!
You almost certainly saved your father's life.
Peace, and bless you,
-dh

No. In fact...I went to the funeral of a friend just LAST NIGHT who's blood sugar dropped and he had a seizure. By the time he was found and they got him to the hospital, he was brain dead. We were with him when they took him off life support. Very sad. You did the right thing.

While I'm not necessarily agreeing with Dr. Evil (who was a little coarse), perhaps you should learn from this and start gathering as much information on diabetes as you can so that you can better deal with it in the future. I don't think his sugar was at 1, or he'd likely be dead. Learn to get more accurate measurements and what to do if he goes hypoglycemic again. Here's my diabetes info webpage with all kinds of helpful information:

You definitely did the right thing. The only other thing you could have done would have been to give glucagon or apply honey or frosting to the gums to help bring up the blood sugar and minimize the brain damage that occurs when the blood sugar goes below 60. It is advisable for all family members to receive training to test blood sugar and be prepared to administer emergency treatment when there is a diabetic in the household. Most hospitals have free classes for diabetics and their families. With his blood sugar that low and him being nonresponsive, it would have been wrong to try to give liquids like some have suggested, which would likely have gone into his lungs and caused aspiration pneumonia which could also have been life threatening.

I have been an insulin dependent since my childhood. While 911 can always help, you can easily raise his blood sugar by giving him some orange juice, if he is still contious and able to drink the juice. You can also buy fast acting glucose gel from any pharmacy. You can do this even if you choose to call 911.
