How long have you been coughing?
Do you cough up any mucous?
Do you feel like you need to cough up something but cannot?
Does the cough prevent you from eating? From sleeping?
It can be many things. Go to the doc, especially if the cough is not getting better or lasting more that the length of an average cold.

Have you seen a doctor? You don't say what illness you have - flu? Cold? Maybe you need prescription cough medicine. I've had nonstop coughing myself in the past from bronchitis and even the prescription cough medicine with codeine didn't help. The only thing that helped quiet the cough was albuterol, which comes in an inhaler.

Millions or billions microorganism are always around us that naked eyes hardly see them. When the immune system is very weaken from the colds or illness, the body must sneeze or cough them out; or just a little cool or dry air can also cause cough. Healthcare facilities always equip very powerfull air purify system with UV lights, ions and filters; etc. At home, should prepare sick room with at least HEPA air cleaner, and keep optimal temperature and humidity air along with with medicines described by doctor.
