Probably from the archaic "men as hunters" thing. Historically, men hunted and men were rewarded with the "best cut" or first choice (kind of like how dad always got the chicken breast and the kids get stuck with legs, in contemporary society).
Personally I think it's extremely appealing (even sexy perhaps?) if a guy is a vegetarian. It's hard enough to find a guy that admits to even LIKING animals... much harder to find one that has a problem with eating one. :)

Read the " Sexual Politics of Meat".
It will explain it all.
By the way I'm total agreement.
This is why I like to target males
so heavily in vegetarian outreach:
1. For the animals
2. For the vegetarian women who
need mates
3. So that males can see the correlation
between meat and sexism and become
psychologically more healthy
4. To help improve people's sex lives
in general. Since it is that meat causes
erectile dis-function.
I've aided several females in the conversion
also, but the males seem to need more help
because of the machismo factor.
Rock on.

It's part of a larger cultural phenomenon, the idea that eating meat and masculinity went hand in hand. I don't care one way or the other. I don't eat quiche just because I don't like it, and I am not a vegetarian because I like burgers too much.

Truly it does. Meat eating is an embodiment of our patriarchal and sexist society. Not eating animals is rejecting the notion of male domination. And that is why insecure men meet Vegetarianism with such stiff resistance, it challenges their power.

Just wanted to tweak chefzilla a little. Check the links below!
I always find it hilarious that after 50 years of being a veggie (many of them overweight) people are still shocked that I'm veggie!

please don't get me wrong because i'm not putting down vegetarianism
I guess it would be because most vegetarian men are very thin and sickly looking because of the lack of iron which comes from red meat in their diet.
also meat has protiens that build into muscle.
now...
overeating meats can lead to obesity but...
a healthy diet of meat and vegetables is what makes us strong as human beings.
we are omnivores which means our bodies NEED both meat and veggies.
our bodies were designed to metabolise and get nutrition from both sources.
A person who eats meat also has veggies and starch with his meal to get the full amount of protiens vitamins and carbs the human body needs.
someone who eats nothing but friut and veggies do not get the essentials to grow strong.
sure there are pills and supplements a vegetarian can take but it doesnt work the same way as eating a meal that the body needs.
Like I said..I'm not putting down eating habits but I personally have never seen a buff and muscular vegetarian.
EDIT:
To Greenghost...
Nice!
I guess I stand corrected.
But..like I said I PERSONALLY have never seen one...until now that is.
