hi all hope you can help, my mum is 89, and has atrial fibrilation, however she has just had a blood results back and the levels have double in the last year

creatimine levels 109 to 209 in the last year
urea levels 25 to 15 in the last year

doctor has lowered the 80 mg frusemide dose to 40 mg, however I am just wondering what affect this would have? and also if thiis does not work what can be done? I only ask this question as I have not had much luck with several doctors, and I had to insist on a blood test when she previously had digoxin toxicity (however the doctors did not believe me, she ended going to hospital with it). Thanks again take care

Creatinine and urea levels are used to measure kidney function and if they are becoming raised it may indicate a degree of renal failure. You should ask to speak with your mother's physician to discuss the implications of blood results.

Frusemide can cause many abnormalities in the blood results - most of which are reversible on stopping it. Why does you mum take it? Is it for swollen ankles or for breathlessness? Does it work? Sometimes swollen ankles depending on the cause do not respond to diuretics. Sometimes there is a medication cause e.g. amlodipine for Blood pressure which could be the cause.

Frusemide should be used with caution in people with any kidney impairment as it can occasionally worsen it. Does she take any anti inflammatories also? If she does this could be the cause of the problem and she'd be best advised to try to stop them.

Urea levels can vary according to how hydrated someone is. Creatinine is the test normally used to assess kidney function.
