Yes, very possible. Herpes simplex virus is usually dormant and can lie in the body undetected for many before something triggers an outbreak...

Yes, they could. Some people can actually carry the virus and never have an outbreak.
There are blood tests - but even those are 100% accurate.
There really isn't anyway to know for sure. When in doubt - use protection.
