When I go to different countries (I've been to several countries in Asia) I just love trying out their streetfoods...stuff vended on sidewalks and corners, because it's a good way to view and taste their culture...what do you think?

I enjoy that as well. It is a nice, informal, way to, as you have said, experience the culture of a community. After all... what is a vacation without the food! However I would always look into the health codes of a different country... Sometimes you really don't know what all is in the food. Enjoying street food is fun, so long as you look into the hazards.

Street food rocks, especially when you have no clue what they are talking about when they serve it up, and it turns out great. Make sure you follow your spidey sense and refrain from raw fish and shell foods, as they will put you in the hurt locker bad. I had a bad salad while in Costa Rica, I had a feeling it was bad, ate it anyway and didn't s**t straight for two weeks. The best foods I have eaten were from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, the U.S. of course, Mexico, Canada (Halifax), Germany, the U.K. (believe it or not), and Thailand. I did have some really great chow in Peru, made fresh and very unique in comparison to other Latin countries.

as a general rule, I do not eat street food from developing countries, but do from all others.
Example, in India street venders make a delicious smelling curried rice dish.. but I steer clear since you have no idea how it was prepared, using dirty microbe or virus infected water perhaps.. etc.
But, when I was in the south of Spain, the fisherman cook their daily catch over an open pit fire right on the beach, then add it to some rice and make the MOST AMAZING PAELLA I have ever tasted.. for dirt cheap. I see the fish go from alive to cooked.. and watch the entire cooking process... so I have no qualms about eating it.

I would have never tried calamari had I not tried street food. I went to a fest in Germany and got these round things that I thought was onion rings but there were kinda chewy. The next day I asked one of my german employees what I was eating and they told me. They were very good, and I love them now. I love street food, it is usually cheaper and is home made unlike in resturants. Plus you can actually she how they are preparing it. Check out Anthony Bourdain on Travel Channel on No Reservations. He does this stuff all the time.

It's a good way to try the flavors of the country, but depending on where you are, the sanitary practices could make the food outright dangerous.

My mother once bought some fruit juice from a street vendor in Mexico after he reassured her his washed all of his fruits before use. Later that day she saw him washing his fruits- in the gutter!

Street food gives tourists a fun glimpse on the country's culture. The visit would not be complete if one does not try the street food :)

Yes, definitey stay away from the raw seafood (raw meats in general). I would try street food, but it may depend on what your own stomach is used to. I live on Chinese food and love to try all sorts of things, but my fiance is a meat, potatoes, chicken and caesar salad with a pint of salt guy. When we go home to Taiwan to visit, he's sticking with the McD's and KFC. I will be hitting the night markets!

absolutely! I think it's a much more real version of the culture, but also we were a little scared to try some of it due to our weak american sensibilities. haha We did actually have a few street foods while we were in Thailand.
