My friends say I'm not, just because I eat milkshakes from McDonalds. They say I eat gelatine in candy too. :(

veggies rule

I am veggie because I like animals and can't bear to think of the suffering it goes through when it is being killed. I simply can't eat meat. A lot of people really hate that about me, but for me, its my life

No, I'm afraid you're not. It's not the milkshakes - it's the gelatine. Ignore the person who said gelatine in candy is made from sugar - can't imagine where they got that idea from. If it says gelatine in the ingredients, then it's boiled up bones.
I have to say though, that if you're really serious about the animal welfare side of things, PLEASE stop handing your cash over to McDonalds. Whatever their huge propaganda machine may try to make you believe, they are responsible for the torture and death of millions of animals every single year.
If you want to be an ethical vegetarian as well as a dietary one, you need to think about where your food is coming from, what other businesses the companies you give your money to are in. There are levels of commitment to this obviously - buying your weekly vegetables in a supermarket which sells meat as one of its many products is one thing (though I know several vegetarians who won't do this) - but actually entering a McDonalds and buying anything is directly contributing to the meat industry.

Eat a healthy diet and one you are comfortable with. Your "friends" need to get off your case and support your desire to eat healthy food that you find acceptable.

There are vegetable gelatins used in some candies so that may not be an issue, and zillions of sweets without any gelatin.

Since most sensible vegetarians will eat no kill foods like eggs, milk and honey, the shakes are not a problem. Here's the ingredient list as given on McDonalds.com for shakes and a pretty good idea they are veggie, if not especially great for you:
Ingredients, Chocolate Shake
Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream: Milk, sugar, cream, nonfat milk solids, corn syrup solids, mono- and diglycerides, guar gum, dextrose, sodium citrate, artificial vanilla flavor, sodium phosphate, carrageenan, disodium phosphate, cellulose gum, vitamin A palmitate. CONTAINS: MILK. Chocolate Syrup: High fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, water, cocoa (processed with alkali), natural (vegetable source) and artificial flavors, salt, potassium sorbate (preservative), vanillin (artificial flavor). May contain small amounts of other shake flavors served at the restaurant, including egg ingredients when Egg Nog Shakes are available.

Their website lists the ingredients for their entire menu and there are several veggie options. Most fast food places provide nutritional and ingredient info at the stores, online, or on request. Many vegetarian magazines and websites also list what is acceptable.

One thing to think about in eating fast food is that some restaurants may use beef tallow or lard in their baking or cooking oils.

Milkshakes are vegetarian, but not vegan. Though supporting McD's is weird... You aren't a vegetarian if you still eat gelatin. IT IS NOT MADE FROM SUGAR! Just cut out JellO, marshmallows, taffy, camera film and fruit snacks- you'll be fine. Below are two lists of vegan candy that you might not have thought were veg. The first also has info on gelatin. The second has lots of lists of "accidentally vegan" foods. Good luck!

Some gelatins are made from cartilage tissue from animals. Check it out on the web, a couple of years ago, I found a website which lists names and brands of candies which are vegetarian because they do not use gelatin from animals.

Dude....I wouldn't worry about labels. Vegetarian means different things to different people. I;ve heard people tell me they were veggies...but they ate fish. Gelatin is an animal product, but how extreme do you really need to be? Everything was alive at some point. I think under most standard definitions of the word vegetarian, you are. But again...do what you want to do,.....don;t worry about what it's called or what others call you.

Vegetarians don't eat any by products from a dead animal. This includes gelatin.

Gelatin is not sugar. I wish people would stop answering when they don't know the answers! Gelatin comes from boiled bones.

How do you eat a milkshake :) (jokes!)

Most vegetarians still consume dairy products such as milk and cheese and also eat eggs. Vegan on the other hand refers to a vegetarian that does not eat any animal derived foods or drinks.

Dude...haven't you asked this before?
Yes you're still a vegetarian, stop listening to your friends! A vegan wouldn't be able to have anything with gelatin because it is an animal by-product but a vegetarian can have it.

Vegetarians often eat cheese, eggs, milk... etc. Also they don't wear fur, leather... But, a vegan... eats nothing that comes from an animal or animal product.
