I've had an excessive mucus cough and a runny nose for awhile now. Sometimes I have coughing fits that continue for awhile. Also, often times I feel like I'm getting better and the symptoms are going away, but they come back. I drink plenty of fluids and take Robitussin. I also use cough drops.

Plus, my left ear feels plugged up. Everything sounds muted from that ear. Could this be an ear infection? If so, how should I proceed?

What do you think is the best thing I should do? Ugh, I am so ready for this cold to be over. =(

I would say its a bad thing because it indicates your immune system is in pretty bad shape, therefore, i suggest you make changes in your lifestyle( specially diet, exercise and sleep)Try to go fot healthier, whole foods, fit some sort of exercise routine into your daily schedule and make sure you are sleeping enough(also check your quality of sleep...)
You also mentioned it goes away sometimes, so monitor what you do differently during the time that it does go away and try to stick to it because apparently it makes you feel better.
However, i strongly advise you to go to a doctor ASAP because its better to treat any kind of ailments in the early stages.
Best of luck :)

well, go to see a doctor of course. i am even surprised u asked. if u re having cold more than 5 days u should go and see a doctor - that means your body can't cope with infection itself, it needs antibiotics. and yes, long cold can cause an ear infection. so go get appointment now

You have cold for almost over a month due to a WEAK IMMUNITY
you must to increase your immunity strenght to help it to combate infection(virus or bacteria)
It is the MOST helpful, effective, herbal and safe:
Eat Nigella (Black seed) every day with nonstop
as me on the breakfast or dinner take it with cheese
Nigella (has Thymoquinone,Nigellone,Nigellacin,charbohydrates, fibers,....etc)
-It has anitmicrobial activity
-It has immunostimulator activity
-It has anti-inflammatory activity
-It relaxes GIT(gasterointestinal tract) due to volatile oil (thymoquinone)
-It has anticancer activity
-It has anticestodal (anti parasite)activity
..............................................................etc of activities
For your runny nose(rhinorrhea):
If you hasn't any heart problems
You can use Antihistamines(such as chlorphenramine maleate)+ pesudoephedrine (decongestant)
(Topical -drops- decongestant will make rapid rebound of your nose but oral (systemic one) don't make rebound but there are systemic side effects)

Go to a doctor. It sounds like it's matriculating into (gasp!) pneumonia.
