Obviously, my friend, you have not been to India where millions of people have been vegetarians for centuries. There are more vegetarian restaurants in Southern India than you can possibly imagine and the foods are wonderful. That is one heckuva long lasting trend! America is based on cattle and beef to a great extent. As a result, a diet not including meats is still looked at sideways by many who do not understand alternative nutrition.
Those of us who were not born vegetarian adopted it as a lifestyle for health reasons. Personally, the thought of animal flesh rotting in my digestive tract to make it palatable for absorption is a bit of a turn off. I will take a scrambled egg any day. But I won't get on a platform and lecture the man across the table from me who is blissfully chewing on a slab of cow muscle.
You sound like a serious candidate for racial profiling LOL. You are going by surface appearance only! As with anything else in this life, there are always those who try things out for awhile then drop them for something new. Many people embrace vegetarianism for awhile, then get the urge for a burger and return to their old ways.
I tried that once. All I did was get very sick because after so many years my nervous system could not deal with meat.
Many younger people are vegetarian also simply because it is more economical for people short of cash. Beans are a lot cheaper than meat. Perhaps you live in a university town with many students living on short finances?
I look like me, not every other vegetarian out there. What does a vegetarian look like, exactly? Skinny, new age or neo hippie clothing, dreads, just what? I am very curious.

Definitely not for me. I've been a vegetarian for 17 years. It's a serious commitment for me. a total lifestyle, and clothes have nothing to do with it. It's an unfair stereotype to tag all vegetarians as "look-alikes". I have other vegetarian friends of different shapes, sizes, races, religions, and we all look and dress different.

Oh yes, I feel soo trendy having to constantly deal with morons who say stupid things like
"Help animals?? I would rather help people!"
when it is fact their apathetic way of saying "I am too lazy to do good for anyone."
Gosh, it is like I am the most popular girl in school! Like when I go to thanksgiving dinner and my uncle talks about shoving turkey down my throat against my will... Oh yes, I know I am trendy.
Like when I am trying to eat my lunch in peace, and those around spend the entire time making me explain the biology that a fish is not an animal...
or asking me to explain all my views while I am trying to eat so they can try to find *loopholes* to *catch* me at being a hypocrite...
and then all those meat-eaters have tons of comments on how vegetarians are "trying to push their way of life on others" when all vegetarians *really* want to do is lead a peaceful existence and sleep peacefully at night.
Gosh, it is like, I don't even have to buy expensive clothing; I am the trendiest mama-jama on the block!
lol lol lol lol

for some it is ans some not. Perhaps some have more emphasis on healthy food in general and avoiding meat. Others seem truly weak and faint alot, have difficult births due to missing some vitamins.
