try a small, place, a little local watering hole, 1st- a number of franchise restaurants may expect that you will spend what "they" use as procedure, here in MI we often times have to fill a quota of guests, a food menu, and gratuity included/dining room rental and must spend so much cash, there's too much drama, you have to be conscience of other guests there kids etc...
I dont know your friends age but here it is a local small bar may have some fun appetizers, lower priced drinks with the same quality liquors, providing you friend isn't health savvy you can take your night and eat whatever, they may let you bring your own food in if they dont serve food, have fun go relax dont make it a production have fun, spend what you want do let them tell you make it your own, its seems a little funny to walk in to a strange place but the best buzz maybe be in some place where that you know not a soul and you guys tear it up and create a memory or 2

We love to eat at the Cheesecake Factory. Though I find it to be a bit on the expensive side, the menu is large, the food is great, and the cheesecake is to DIE for:)
