RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a very contagious viral infection of the lungs and upper airway that affects infants and toddlers. It presents itself as a cold in older children and adults, but in infants (especially preemies) and toddlers it can potentially be very dangerous. Another term for it is sticky airway disease because the mucous is so thick and stringy that these babies are not able to cough up the mucous. Sometimes the mucous becomes so thick that it can plug off some of the smaller bronchial tubes in the lungs.
