I don't really know what Lordy Lordy look whos forty kind of party is. When my husband turned 40 all the guests wore black, he had a cake shaped like a tomb stone with his epitaph, and we decorated in black streamers and Black balloons. We also had one of his friends arrive as the grim reeper when he made his birthday wish.
So if you don't want that kind of party then how about focusing on the number 40 and let that be your theme. Of course 40 candles on the cake, 40 balloons, 40 guests, 40 of each appitizer, etc.
Or how about going back to the year he was born, the 60's were pretty free so have people dress like hippys and decorate in peace signs and big flowers. That could be great fun. Good luck. :)

Well since you are working on a budget which is a good think, I would recommend a barbeque!! This way you could invite friends and family and still be affordable!! Not sure if you have a Sam's Club Membership, but if you do you can purchase a 1/2 of sheet cake for around 20.00 this would be enough for everyone and you could purchase most of the stuff at Sam's like Hamburgers, Hotdogs, etc.

You make turning 40 sound like a plague. My best ever birthday party was my 40th that my ex- threw me. It was a surprise party, too. It may have helped that on the day in question, my brother and I went out to shoot some pool and have a beer and by the time we got to my place, I was already hammered. The house was full of people, food and music. What's not to like?

Plan around his favorite sport or hobby. For my husband it was golf. I decorated everything in golf motif. Then I ask his friends to bring small gift relating to golf. I got him his dream clubs. It was a surprise and a great success. Good luck.
