I was on meds for years, but bought a book called:
*Take The Pressure Off Your Heart - 8 weeks to lower BP without prescription drugs* by Robert E Kowalski
And It WORKS !
My bp is now the same as when I was in my 20's - and that was 30 years ago !
Basically, it's high fibre, lots of fruits and veggies, limiting red meat, plenty of fish ( esp oily fish) stopping smoking, plenty of exercise, etc etc.

Basically, foods low in salt. If you are overweight, diet to lose weight. Stop smoking. Moderate exercise helps. Your doctor should determine whether you need an extensive workup or be on medication. Unrecognized or untreated high blood pressure can bring on heart and vascular disease.

The best way to keep your B.P. under control is to:
1) Eat less salt in everything
2) Less spicey foods
3) Avoid pickles as much as possible
4) Keep your weight in control by exercising. Be it walking an hour in the morning or evening.
5) Practice Yoga or Meditation. Believe it or not, it actually helps !
