The virus is present in blood, semen, and vaginal secretions.
For a virus to be able to enter a cell it needs to recognize a receptor. HIV infects CD4 T-cells and macrophages, because these cells have receptors that the virus can use to enter. These are cells of the immune system.
The macrophages are present among the cells lining the genital organs and the anus.
So when the virus leaves one person in his or hers secretions it can "stick" to these cells and enter them and spread to the rest of the body.
I guess that sometimes we get little cuts and wounds during intercourse and that it also can enter through these.

It is important to remember that HIV is NOT transmitted through casual contact, touching, hugging, kissing, coughing, sneezing, insect bites, water, food, utensils, toilets swimming pools etc.

And a comment for Patti A, the site you give as a source actually says "The only forms of birth control that will protect against HIV are abstaining from penetrative sex or using condoms while having sex. "

Following certain guidelines it is actually possible to have a sexual relationship with an infected person without getting the virus yourself.

HIV is spread via sexual intercourse, sharing needles, breastfeeding, child birth etc. where an infected person is involved. Receptive behaviors increase the risk of HIV transmission than incertive behaviors exception may be that the male is not circumcised then even insertive is higher risk. There are valid ways to avoid HIV. Abstain from sexual contact or have only on partner who is uninfected who is only with you. Finally, use contacts consistently and correctly with everyone you are with. Realize that only abstaining and monogamy are 100% prevention methods. Condoms are a risk reducing method.

HIV / AIDS is an interesting topic and the answers to avoiding infections can be puritanical sounding. It isn't a matter of what is "right or wrong" rather it is a matter of what keeps a person from having contact with the disease.

Aids is a virus that attacks the auto immune system and is transferred from one person to another through the exchange of body fluids or infected needles, in the case of drug addicts. Avoidance of infected persons is the best preventive action, use of a condom is a poor second choice.
