I needed to use some last night for a chest cold since im asthmatic and I still had about 20 left in a prescription for one year ago. Is it still going to work? If yes, how do you know this? I dont want someone just guessing. If I need to go today to get another prescription I will (if its not going to work)

I will only answer the "will it work" question.

Usually, prescription drugs have a very long shelf life if properly
stored. The main exception is sometimes heart drugs.

They need to be stored in the prescription bottle, in a dry place
(not in the humid bathroom), and away from sunlight.

The military studied antibiotics that they had stored for 25 years
and found them still effective!!! 25 years!!!

The main reason people say one year, is they do not want you
to use things you do not know are appropriate or to share with
someone else or if improperly stored in humid conditions or in
direct sunlight, and the drug stores and companies want to sell
more..

I keep my meds in a dresser drawer in the brown bottles from
the drug store. They work for a very long time, unless cardiac
medicine. I know this from both published articles in medical
journals and from personal usage.

First of all you should not be self medicating! Second after a year the chemical components of the medication change thus the "use before" date on the bottom of the label. Go to a doctor and get a new script.
