There would be nothing to stop them from eating fish, but then they wouldn't be vegetarian if they did. So the answer is no because a fish is an animal and veggies do not eat animals..
Vegetarians can eat plants, fungi and animal bi-products eg. eggs, dairy and honey. Animal bi products would be off the menu if you were vegan though.
I have been a vegetarian for 26 years.

OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! How many times does this have to be covered?
NO. NO. NO. Vegetarians CANNOT and DO NOT eat fish.
Vegetarians do not eat any dead animal, any part of a dead animal, or any by-product of a dead animal. Now unless something bizarre has happened in the natural world and a fish is no longer viewed as an animal, then quite plainly a vegetarian would not eat it.
There is no such thing as a semi-vegetarian, a demi-vegetarian, a pescatarian, or any of the other phrases that are bandied around these boards.
You are either vegetarian or you are not.
You are either vegan or you are not.
If you are neither of those, you are an omnivore. You might be one that chooses not to eat meat or poultry, but if you choose to continue eating fish you are absolutely no kind of vegetarian.
It really isn't complicated and I am baffled that it seems to be so difficult to get anybody to understand it.
If something ever had a face, a heartbeat or a central nervous system then vegetarians should not be eating it.

There is actually TONS of variety among vegetarian foods. If you think that salads and bread are all that vegetarians eat, boy are you in for a pleasant surprise.
Check out a few vegetarian cookbooks on amazon.com. I'd especially recommend two by Kurma das - 'Great Vegetarian Dishes' and 'Quick Vegatarian Recipe Cards: Recipes You Can Prepare in a Hurry'. Both feature exceptionally well-tasting vegetarian recipes that are also easy to follow and make.
Different people believe, and eat, different things as vegetarians. For example, I was born into a vegetarian family 39 years ago and have been one since, apart from a few times that I tried meat (and did not like it) during my teen years. I do consume dairy products but no fish, meat and eggs.
Some vegetarians believe eating fish is vegetarian. I would suggest watching any video that shows how frantically fish struggle for life when they are caught and the agony evident in their thrashings, before deciding whether killing them does not count.
As for what you can eat as a vegetarian, there's tons of stuff - from dishes made with grains to lentils, beans, breads, rice, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, etc. Good luck if you are thinking of turning vegetarian.

Hi. The most common type of vegetarian in the USA is who that does not eat the following:beef, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish or animal flesh of any kind. But, they do eat eggs and dairy products.
This is referred to as an lacto-ovo vegetarian. Some people include fish in the list to eat, but in my opinion that is wrong (i'm a vegan).
If a vegetarin doesn't eat meat, why eat fish? Fish is meat. Meat comes from an animal, and a fish is an animal. I honestly believe that some people decide to go vegetarian, but try to stick with eating fish becasue they like it. And, if they like it, why go vegeatrian at all?
I admit, that not eating some meat is better than eating all meat, but I find it dissapointing. So, basically, there are quite a number of people that think that they can still call themsleves vegeatrain and eat fish, and i think there is a term for it, but in my honest opionion, it is wrong.

No, because a fish is an animal, and a vegetarian doesn't eat animals. The good and easy to remember guideline is not to eat anything which has a face or a mother.

Ignore the people saying vegetarians eat fish; they really don't. By definition vegetarians don't eat any flesh from any animal and that includes fish. People who eat fish but not other animals are called pescatarians. It really isn't the same thing.
(ps. Jodie B you are not a vegetarian!!! you eat animals! Also to lonedragonfli, I'm not telling you what you should eat, but you AREN'T a proper vegetarian, please stop calling yourself one as it confuses all the non-vegetarians in to thinking the rest of us will eat fish, and real vegetarians don't!)

No, someone who eats no meat but does eat fish is often referred to as a demi vegetarian. A true vegetarian will eat no thing that once lived.
A vegan will not eat any animals or products containing any part of an animal....you'd be surprised how many things do! They will not wear clothes etc. that are made from any animals for example, leather. They will not drink milk because although it seems uncruel, the cows are forced to be in a constant state of pregnancy to produce milk and don't have the best time of it.
Hope that helps.

Many vegetarians eat fish; I'm one of them.
When it comes down to it, it's up to you to decide what you do and don't want to eat. It's funny to me how many non-vegetarians, people I don't even know, have gotten really upset about the fact that I eat fish. "You can't eat that!" Well, I didn't sign a contract. :) When I decided to go veggie, I just thought about what I wanted to cut out. It's just my own thing. I eat fish and eggs and dairy. I don't eat land meat, jello, or foods where the meat has been picked off. That's just me.
If someone feels that I am not a "real" vegetarian because of this, that's fine. I'm doing it for my health, not for approval. I'll just have to accept the fact that I'm not allowed in the "club". :)

of course they can eat fish.
They just would not be vegetarians.
vegetarians do not eat flesh. That means that they will not eat animals of any persuasion - be they insect, fish, fowl or fur. Likewise they will avoid all products that contain these creatures, or parts or products of these creatures ('Haribo's' for instance, or 'Extra Stong Mints' contain pork or beef gelatine - which is made from bones; Worcester sauce contains fish bits; 'cochineal' - a fairly common food colourant - is made from crushed beetles..... and so on).
Those that avoid all animal products and by-products are known as vegans. They will also refuse leather, eggs, milk and other dairy products and honey (a by-product of bees).
There are some that have conjured up all sorts of little side-alleys fro those who do not quite follow the above (ovo-lacto-vegetarians for those who will happily eat eggs and drink milk; 'piscatarian' for one who will eat fish - for some bizarre reason - but not any other flesh... and so on). But basically there are three human dietary principals: -
*Vegans who will not eat animals or ANY animal by-products
*Vegetarians who will not eat animals or most animal by-products
*Omnivores who will eat animals as well as (at least in theory) all of the products eaten by the two groups above.
The first two - above - are actually just slightly differing aspects of 'Herbivore' - one of the three dietary principals that biologists use... 'herbivore, 'omnivore' and 'carnivore'. There are many people who would list themselves as a 'carnivore' when speaking to a veggie, but they are misapplying the principal. A carnivore generally eats ONLY meat. The human digestive system is not able to do that. Humans, generally, must be either Herbivore or Omnivore.
That omnivores might desire to restrict where they get their animal eating fix from is neither here nor there. They can eat just fish, or just chicken, or not eat pork, or have chocolate covered ants after a meal, or what have you. If they eat from any animals they are NOT vegetarian.
So the basic answer to your question is NO. If you eat fish you are not a vegetarian.

If you are a vegetarian then you do not eat meat or fish.
However, many people have now opted to eat a diet which consists of fruit, vegetables and fish. Indeed this is the staple diet of people in Japan and they have the longest life expectancy of any humans in the world.
If you can cut down on meat, especially red meat which has been proven to cause cancer, then you will be helping to make yourself much healthier. A diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish, along with regular exercise will help to keep you youthful and fit for much longer.
PS. If you smoke or take drugs give that up to!
