I feel lousy with a sore throat, stuffy nose, bad cough, but sometimes in the past when I've gone to the doctor I'm told, "It's just a cold, over the counter meds will ease the symptoms" How do I know when it is time to go to the doctor?

Chronic sore throat, and elevated temperature. If it is an actual sinus infection instead of a cold you might see the doctor for help with that.

A cold usually last two weeks and unless you have complications they won't give you an antibiotic because it won't help a virus and of course a cold is a virus. Sometimes you get a fever with a cold but usually that is the flu. Most flu's and colds can be treated at home. The flu, not the 24 hour virus, makes you very ill and you will know the difference. If you are coughing a lot and it hurts plus you have pain in the upper back you could have pneumonia than you go to the Dr. Blessings

Pneumonia comes from having a cold and not taking care of it. If you get a cold, you should immedietly take care of it until you are health again. Whenever I get a cold, I eat a raw clove of garlic (if you wash it down with milk, it doesnt taste bad). Garlic has enzymes in it that fight against a cold and most of the time stop it from happening. It will also help while you have a cold, but it wont make it go away.

If you have a sore throat that last more than a week you should see a doctor. It could be signs of a serious health condition.

When the OTC medicines like Aspirin etc. fail to give you relief and you start getting phlegm when you cough indicating a secondary infection (cold is a viral infection but secondary infections are bacterial). Depending upon where you are staying, you may have alternative options like herbs, homeopathy, Ayurveda etc.

It's when you see $20 laying on the ground outside your window.. and you are too tired and sore to walk out and get it. That's the difference between the flu and a cold. :-)
