Epilepsy is the abnormal firing of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain. This can cause seizures, which can range from eye rolling/twitching (petit mal) to a full blown convulsion (grand mal).

Thing like flashing lights from ANY source can trigger a seizure in someone with the disorder, but medication can help these people so they can live a normal life. Some also need surgery, and they should still avoid triggers even with medication.

There is some evidence to suggest that a gluten free diet may help some people with a certain kind of epilepsy (these people often also have Type 1 diabetes or other autoimmune diseases).

Epilepsy is also known as seizure disorder. It is a disease in which the patient is prone to having recurrent seizures. Just because someone has ONE seizure, that does not make them epileptic. Recurrent seizures can be treated with medications, and there are a ton of anti-seizure medications out there for use.

A person who has frequent seizures must take a few precautions - no driving, climbing ladders, swimming alone. They shouldn't do things that would present a dangerous situation if a seizure should unexpectedly start.

The internet cannot cause epilepsy. However, rarely, in someone who already has a seizure disorder, flickering lights could induce a seizure. We intentionally expose patients to sleep deprivation, flickering lights, and other stressors to try and induce a seizure when the diagnosis is unclear. Therefore, a website or video game with lots of flashing lights could theoretically cause a seizure to start in someone who already has epilepsy.

Although seizures sound and look scary, they are only on the rarest occasion dangerous.
