If your count is low, it's important to figure out the reason. You may improve your hemoglobin by taking iron supplements, and the ones that are slow release and coated to not bother your stomach.
Better still, to maintain the optimal level after you take the iron supplements, practice good healthy nutrition that will support normal hemoglobin levels.

If you already know that your hemoglobin levels are low, then this must mean you spoke to a doctor to get this information. Did you not think to ask this question at that time? Your doctor certainly should have told you. Before you start dosing yourself, speak to the doctor and find out if the doctor wants you take anything at all and if so, how much and how often. If it's to be iron, take it with vit. C to facilitate the body's absorption.
FYI: Using Epogen or Procrit (erythropoietin) is not for run-of-the-mill iron-deficiency anemia and Epogen/Procrit is by prescription only.

Eat more iron- containing foods. Animal sources are better. Animal sources-- Red meat, organ meats such as liver, kidney. Vegetable sources-- Green, leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage, mustard greens, beans, peas, dates.
Also, take pills with iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid.
If you are losing blood due to some medical problem, get yourself treated.

Live at a higher altitude. Your body will produce more hemo if your body is having more trouble obtaining more O2. So if you go to a higher altitude, where the concentrations of O2 is less then you body will make more so it can absorb more.
