Chicken soup (not the recipe listed by another poster) is actually known to be a better expectorant than the guaifensin that's found in many cold medicines. Salt-water gargles soothe the sore throat if not too salty (1/2 tsp in a glass is plenty), and hot tea or careful steam inhalation (don't burn yourself) helps with nasal congestion. This combination is actually better than medication, though you may still need acetaminophen/paracetamol for aches and pains.

If you wanna a herbal remedy for cold (which is very safe and effective)
1)You must increase the strenght of your immunity by eating Nigella (black seed, very powerful and it is number 1) and if you want other one but weaker than nigella, you can take Echnicea purpurea (Immulant tab, syrup)
-These 2 herbs have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal
-Nigella has:
1-Immunostimulant
2-Anticancer
3-Flatulence in case of gases due to volatile oil (Thymoquinone)
4-Antiparasite (anticestodal)
5-Antiinflammatory (inhibit's COX enzyme)
and many many uses
N.B.: when you eat Nigella DON'T crush in except in your mouth (by pinch) to not loss it's volatile oil (active ingredient)
2)plus herbal remedy, u can take honey which immunostimulant too and useful for cough
3)For sorethroat, you can gargle with CLOVE tea 3 times daily before meals
(1-3 teaspoonful of clove + boiled water --> cover the cup for 10-15 minutes and then gargle)
*Clove has antimicrobial activity due to Eugenol and has anaesthesia like action
4)For congestion of the nose, u must use medication according your Doctor
-But you can use: when there is no heart problem
-Antihistaminics such as Chlorphenramine maleate
-Peudoephedrine
*They are prescrition medication

Homemade Chicken soup contains some kind of healing ingredient, I don't think they know what it is yet, but it works for a lot of people. You can buy an Expectorant to bring up the stuff from your throat. Also, my daughter swears by Airborne. And people don't usually do this- I don't know why- but open some windows to let out the germs and get the fresh air in. Now do what this Mom tells you to do!

Try an over the counter decongestant...dayquil during the day, nyquil at night. If you have a cough, get cough meds with supressant in it. A saline rinse nasal spray is also good for the sinuses if they are infected. Drink plenty of fluids (avoiding dairy products during the cold), and get lots of rest.

I have good one for sore throat - may you can find for cold also there. Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

Here's one from the Yankee Magazine
Take a saute pan
add 1 TBSP of olive oil, 1 minced garlic clove and a finely chopped chile pepper. (or 1/4 teaspoon chile pepper powder)
Saute until the garlic starts to brown
Add to some cold chicken noodle soup with a pinch of ginger
Warm soup up to your temperature on a stove (do not nuke it)
You'll be surpised how much this helps

I swear by this remedy. It won't cure the cold. You just have to let it run it's course. But, I make hot toddy's to help ease my symptoms. Here's the ingredients:
1 cup of hot tea (just plain flavor)
1 wedge of lemon
1 tablespoon of honey
1 cinnamon stick
1 shot of whiskey (if 21 or older)
Drink up. Will help ease sore throat and help you relax so can rest.
