Galangal is a ginger which is commonly used in S.E.Asian Countries cooking. The local called it "Blue Ginger'. You could get the fresh ones in the Vietnamese or Thai grocery stores.
You can also get it in dried powder form. It is used normally in cooking to enhance the flavor.

Have you heard about these two similar: lemongrass and tumeric.
Tumeric is "Yellow Ginger" normally used in cooking curry, has a orange-yellow color giving some curry it's distinctive color and will stained your clothings if it gets on them. Lemongrass looks like leeks but much slender and is used like scallions in cooking toenhance the flavor.

You'll enjoy lots of South East Asian food if you have acquire a taste of galangal. Happy chow!

BTW you got your spelling right, as I believe the word origin for galangal could be a Malay word.

My friend, I'm from that part of the world, however I'm not from Thailand. Galanga is an herb used for seasoning or flavoring. It is similar to ginger, however the taste is very different. Galanga has a riny if I spelled that correctly flesh versus ginger it's more of a firm flesh that can be sliced or diced. It is use mainly to flavor certain cooking which is not as common as ginger. I myself has a piece frozen forever in my freezer. We only use it for selective dishes. If you taste it, it's has a peppery like flavor but not sour like someone mentioned, it's has a distinct fragrance unlike ginger. I wouldn't say it taste good unless you add it to the cooking to flavor the recipe.

you can keep it fresh or in the fridge or it is perfect kept in the freezer too.
i saw in tesco the other day a bag of mixed curry spices in the fresh veg section, it contained an asian bag with fresh galangal, chilli, something else and fresh turmeric, which you dont see very often. and that was in a small tesco near me so im sure you can get it in most tesco's.
