Hi Andrea! 1st look at a clock.2nd: see that she does not hit herself-if the seizure consists of movements. 3rd turn her on her on her side, lying down, to the so called NATO posture with the other arm under her head and the uppermost leg slightly bended -but don't force, just that she does not aspirate= get enything in her lungs 4th CALL THE AMBULANCE ONLY IF THE SEIZURE GOES ON FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES OR COMES BACK WITHOUT HER REGAINING CONSCIOUSNESS!
Minutes are long by an epilepsy patient and if she has medication, seizures most often go away before 5 minutes., so remember to look in the clock FIRST.
DON'T TRY TO PUT ANYTHING IN HER MOUTH, if she bites her tongue can't be helped, but will make the situation worse, if you try putting something in the mouth. If she becomes blue, just wait she will start breathing soon.
Epilepsy is "just" electricity having gone awry in the brain and most often it will stop -if continues more than 5 minutes is a different issue. Usually, after a grand mal(=big bad in French, meaning loss of consiousness, biting of tongue, tonic-clonic=jerky movements of limbs ) seizure the patient is confused, not with it for a while maybe even mute -but breathes regularly and opens eyes, this is not included in the 5 minutes of before.
If you want to, go and see Epilepsy foundation web pages: efa.org they have more of 1st aid for epilepsy. Grand mal looks scary -but the doing something is not the thing at the seizure and waiting is hard -Remember the clock!
If the patient never had a seizure before, a Neurologic workup is a must!

Don't hold her down, but place her so that she isn't going to get hurt. Then get some orange juice, cup your hand under her mouth and pour a small amount, she will begin to come out of the seizure pretty quick. Always be sure to have sugars available in different areas of the house so that you can respond quickly. Those little jars of juice work great and won't spoil if setting at room temp.
