What bad food? I could live on that stuff. I'm an American.

Not so much bad food as plain food. However it is plain and filling food.
There is fine cuisine which is something I eat at a nice restaurant once or twice a month. Good hearty food, the kind I've had in the UK is what most of us have the rest of the month.

There are indeed fine restaurants in England and you can get some wonderful food. However I'd happily have a nice Curry or perhaps Bangers and Mash or Bubble and Squeak over some high priced fancy meal most days.

Because some people do not know what is good. Like anyone else, there is good and bad food in all cuisines.

Of course there are national dishes. There are many of them; and I was raised on them. omernos must be a bit off to say something like that. Totally wrong.

I'm American and enjoy British food very much. Much of American cooking originated as British cooking-- fried eggs, steak and potatoes, apple pie, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, English muffins, cheddar cheese, strawberries and cream, gooseberry pie, chocolate cake with frosting, breakfast cereal & milk, etc. British meat does tend to be well done so French ppl who are used to really rare beef might be critical. I agree with ppl who say that British food isn't really spicy so some ppl might think it's bland. IMHO lightly or unseasoned food is healthier and I enjoy the natural flavor of meat, veggies, etc. One really appreciates British food after eating a lot of strange foreign foods.

England doesn't have bad food just bland food. Traditionally not a lot of spices to choose from. I happen to love the food though. Lots of meats and Stu's and ale's. Good stuff.

Because them lazy arrogant French tw*ts across the English Channel have mouths larger than their brains, and bad mouth it when they haven't tried any of it (in particular a certain French President currently in power)..... and probably their heads of grown too big from people creaming themselves over French Cooking for years.

One of my neightbours brought me back some biscuits from France a couple of years ago. They were like Cream crackers sandwiched together with chocolate............. and not a patch on HobNobs / Jaffa Cakes / Bourbon Creams / Jammie Dodgers / Fox's Party Rings / Maryland Chocolate Chip cookies, etc.

I'm British and have travelled a lot, I have to agree that British food lives up to its reputation for being bad. I blame the produce. The weather makes it impossible to gro really good produce and what is grown is not quality. There is one exception...Yorkshire Puddings.........delish!

Well personally, I live in London and I heard about it before coming here, and I can't say that they proved me wrong!

I think the main reason would be the lack of a national cuisine, and if there are any British dishes they wouldn't be so preferable by International people, or rather, non-British food eating ones!

I also found that the British people are quite easy to satisfy when it comes to food and how good it tastes. Nations who come from certain countries of good food and large cuisines(especially the mediterranean) happen to be more 'picky' about what they eat and when it comes to food they're usually hard to satisfy!

That's my personal theory! I hope it helped or at least made sense :)

It could come from the behaviour of Britons abroad. British tourists are notorious for ordering fish and chips at Paris cafes and generally turning their noses up at local cuisine wherever they go in the World. Not sure if this reputation is entirely justified. I have see Brit backpackers tackling exotic local dishes.

I think it the reputation for being bland and timid of spice.

Oddly enough, it's best delicasies are the ones that contain ginger - a trade spice!

I wouldn't call it "bad" food. perhaps "hearty" would be more appropriate - the english breakfast, fish & chips, bangers, shepherd pie, ales & stouts, etc are just as enjoyable as the more popular cuisines.

Britain for me is one of the best countries in the world to enjoy food... this definitely includes "British".
