Believe it or not, this is a controversial question. There are two sorts of measures commonly done. First is fasting blood sugar levels. If your fasting blood sugar is below 100, you are probably not diabetic. If your fasting blood sugar is between 100 and 126 (these are mg/dl) you are at risk for diabetes. If above 126, you are diabetic. The second type of measure is something called the HA1c. This measures the average amount of glucose in your blood for the last three months. It should be in the 5.0 to 7.0 range. Get both tests to get a good diagnosis.

In Australia .. your fasting blood sugar level should be under 6 mmol/l.. If it is over this a doctor will generally send you for a glucose tolerance test where they give you a "sugar" drink and measure your glucose level after 2 hours. a random blood sugar level is less accurate as it can be affected by food that you have eaten .. though if it is over 10mmol/l it would be advisable to see your doctor.

When I have had my blood glucose test-the normal range is 70-120. If higher-please have your doctor do blood work. In fact, anytime you have a concern about this-please get blood work done at your doctor's office. Do you have any symptoms: Excessive thirst, etc? Wish you the best. Take care.
