Susan is correct. In actual use, the term "guarded prognosis" means it's not looking good, but it's not totally hopeless yet. It's one step above "poor prognosis" and a step below "fair prognosis."

Guarded prognosis is the step above Poor
It basically means the odds are not in your favor for a full and healthy recovery
You will also hear "very guarded prognosis" which is a notch lower towards poor.
It does not mean that all hope is lost -- but it means based on historical data, the outcomes are usually not very good .... and more than likely there will not be a favorable result

A gaurded prognosis is anything that is not stable. A doctor might say 'guarded prognosis' when they are not exactly sure how good /bad its going to be. Its more of a 'cautious' prognosis.

Sadly, it means that the outlook for a person with a guarded prognosis is grim.

I think it means cautious.. could go either way. The person is not definitely going to get worse.. but they may not get better either. The prognosis is a prediction of the probable course and outcome of a disease.

Take a look at the two words separately. Prognosis is a medical term denoting the doctor's prediction of how a patient's disease will progress, and whether there is chance of recovery. However the world has also been used outside of medicine starting recently in areas such as finance for predicting money cycles.
Guarded (I'm assuming you know what this means, lol) in this sense is referring to the patient, and his lack of knowledge about the prognosis. So a guarded pronosis is when the doctor makes evaluates a patient but then keeps the findings from him or her.

It could be for a multitude of reasons, such as if a patient is terminally ill but the doctor or the family doesnt want him to know for fear of depression. It could also be used for example in psychology if the psychologist determines that a patient has a certain condition and wants to administer a test without the patient knowingly affecting the outcome. Hope that helped
