I've been vegi since i was 11 I'm 28 now and have 4 kids of my own (who are not vegies) so I have seen meal dilemas from both sides. There are several types of 'vegetarian' from those who just cut out red meat to vegans don't eat dairy eggs fish or meat. I cook a range of meals for my family and do two versions a meat for everyone else and a vegi version for me, its quite easy with a bit of paractice but 2x the washing up!. There are loads of meat substitutes out there. It's also a really good way to try new stuff (Ilove polenta made from corn) and get your kids to experiment. The web sites are good too. Good luck. Vegetarian shepherd's pie*
3 ozs. of frozen vegi mince
1 tsp of olive oil
2 ozs. of onion, chopped
2 ozs. of carrot
3 ozs. of frozen peas
1/2 vegetable stock cube
1 medium-sized potato (around 175g or 7oz)
1 oz. of low fat grated cheddar cheese
Heat the olive oil in a pan and add the chopped onion, chopped carrot and peas. Cover and cook over a low heat for 5 minutes. Add the soya , crumble in the stock cube and add enough water to moisten. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, adding water if required.
Meantime, boil the potatoes for 20 minutes or until tender; mash once cooked.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
Place the soya mixture in an oven-proof dish and top with mashed potato and grated cheese. Place in a hot oven for 15-20 minutes until cheese is melted and golden.

So, my family's never liked the idea of me being veggie and my mum's forever giving me grief about not eating the right stuff, even though I've hardly been ill once since I stopped eating meat. I don't really know many recipes off my heart cos I just tend to have the same as my family and substitute something instead of the meat part and that works. My mum and dad are kool as long as they don't have to change the way they cook or anything for me. There are loads of great veggie recipe books all over though so try getting one of them.
Oh and no you're not suppose to eat fish, or products with gelatin so just check for them. Many people do eat fish and call themselves veggie but they're not, simply people that don't eat meat. Why do you want to be veggie? if it's because you simply don't like meat then just eat what you do and avoid what you don't, if it's for principle reasons then don't eat anything that was once alive.

A fish is an animal and while there would be nothing stopping you from eating fish, you could not accurately describe yourself as a vegetarian.
There are loads of veggie cook books around and a lot on the internet too. The Vegetarian society have a really good one with lots of information and recipies. http://www.vegsoc.org/
I'm 50 and have been a veggie for 26 years - there is nothing unhealthy about it as long as you eat a balanced diet. I have 4 children who have been brought up as vegetarians, the lads of 18 are as bright as a button and well over 6' in height - so don't believe the nonsense you sometimes hear of veggies being unhealthy.
My best piece of advice with this in relation to other people is - don't try and make them veggies - you will just cause antagonism - let them find out for themselves.

If you eat fish you are a pescatorian rather than a vegetarian. I am not sure how old you are but if you are young, it is not really a good isea to exclude entire food groups without giving it very serious thought. if you decide to be veggie, you need to eat a wide variety of foods such as lentils, beans, pasta, veg (of course) and protein foods such as quorn and tofu. You should also take a food supplement for vegetarians, as you could become deficient in iron and B complex.
You can google for veggie recipes for the whole family - stews, moussaka, cheese dishes and pasta are all very easy and tasty!

My dad refuses to eat vegetarian food. He would rather go hungry than try it. You can't change some people.
There are hundreds of fantastic Indian meals that are vegetarian. Curries for example are great with or without meat.
A lot of pasta dishes too go well without meat. Chinese meals like sweet & sour mixed veg, stir fried veg noodles, or veg spring rolls.
You can also get meat-free versions of sauage, bacon and even black pudding so have a big greasy fried breakfast without the meat.
I've been a vegetarian over 10 years now and have never tried to convert my family. I just eat separate meals, sometimes my mum and I will have a pasta meal together, or all of us will have cheese sandwiches for lunch but mostly my family will have meat for 19.5 out of 20 meals (not counting breakfasts!).
If you want any recipes for anything particilar feel free to e-mail me and I will try to help you as best I can.

Fish are not vegetables, they are animals and a vegetarian wouldn't eat fish or chicken or bacon or sausages. You sound like you have strong likes and dislikes but thats not the same thing as being a vegetarian.
Plus if you are responsible for your families meals then you have their likes and dislikes to take into account as well.
Try doing a cookery course, check out recipies books and websites and try something new.

You can eat what you want to eat. Vegetarians don't eat fish, but many people who don't like the way animals are treated during their lives feel better about eating fish because the fish have more freedom.
You could start them out on vegetarian quorn burgers. Tomato sauce with kidney beans goes well with spagetti. You could do curry with nuts and lentils through it. Spanish omlette. There is so much stuff i could mention. Look up vegetarian recipies. If you'd like to eat it, the chances are they would like to as well. Don't make a fuss about it, just present them with something meat-free and they probably won't even notice! Then you can gradually teach them to cook vegetarian stuff for you so it won't always be you cooking.

what you want to eat is up to you and only you. If you feel that you can't eat meat for moral reasons and you have the will to stick with it then good for you. Whether or not you eat fish is up to you, but keep in mind fish can suffer just as much as any other animal.
As for meals theres plenty of websites that offer vegitarian meal ideas and recipes and you should also look into any vitamins and supplements you could take to ensure you stay healthy.

You sound young. It's not a good idea to give up meat and meat product at a young age. Vegetables are missing an amino acid. You can't eat Fish and still call your self a vegetarian. If you insist, and have no problem with eggs or milk then eat some of that. My suggestion is to keep eatting meat until your an adult. Fish is great. The amino acid will help your brain develop as well as your immune system.
