People with diabetes can live just as long as people without diabetes as long as they are taking good care of themselves and their condition.

The lifespan of a diabetic can vary greatly depending on:

a) The level of control of blood sugars (aim for an A1c of 7.0 or less if possible)
b) The genetics of a person (some people are more prone to complications, others appear to have protection)
c.) The age of diagnosis/how long the person has had diabetes,

and d) what organs have been affected by the diabetes and to what extent, and the overall health and habits of the person.

On average, Type 1 diabetes automatically shorterns lifespan by about 15 years in most people who have it. There are always exceptions, of course. Some will die VERY young, a few others will beat the odds and live until they are 90. As a rule, a 20 year old Type 1 diabetic has about a 4x risk of death as a healthy person the same age. This is why a cure is so important. Managing your blood sugar and general health is key, but insulin is not a cure, and we often can only delay, and not entirely prevent, most complications. However, some people have great genes, try hard, and live for a very long time with no major issues.

Although Type 2 diabetics often have a "milder" form of the disease, they tend to go for a long period undiagnosed, are often overweight, and have more risk factors for heart disease. This leads to an increased risk of early death, about 10 years off the average lifespan on average. This also varies. If a child is diagnosed with Type 2, there is a very good chance that up to 27 (!) years can be cut off their lifespan if changes are not made. The good news is, Type 2 diabetes does NOT have to be a death sentence. Many people make the effort to control it and live normal and long lives.

P.S. With the new technology today and (hopefully) a cure closer than ever, diabetics have the chance to be healthier and live longer lives than ever before. Perhaps these stats will change.

I know plenty that lived long enough to die from other diseases not related to their diabetes. Some diabetics live as long as anyone else but need to exercise, eat right and follow doctor's orders. It is a manageable disease for many. Some are not so lucky and have more serious levels of the disease and live way too short of a life that they cannot control no matter what. Take whatever life hands you and use it the best you can and whatever happens will be the best case scenario. It is all one has. Life is not promised for any length of time to anyone not matter if they have a disease or not. Be greatful.

Here's a little different take on the subject of diabetes--

There are many things you can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.

Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:

Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate

If you are serious about not being falling victim to diabetes needlessly, get a copy of--

"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313

The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work--we both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what did it for me and mine. Best of luck.

The life span of a diabetic has been cut off by about 60%.

See http://www.glycostory.com/mannalive... to see a solution to anti aging.

Listen to people with type 1 and 2 share with you how they were able to produce their own insulin naturally because they were able to "wake up" the body's natural ability to defy aging and create wellness on a cellular level through what is "missing" in our modern diets.

A diabetic can live just as long as a non-diabetic, provided they maintain their weight and blood sugar levels.
