It's really hard to say. Nobody can say for certain when someone's time is up, including doctors. Timelines are only guidelines. Who told you it was inoperable? If this is due to your/the person's general poor health, then that makes the situation more grave.
As with any heart condition, this is a serious matter. I would guess that having diabetes and this condition mean that other arteries are blocked as well, and circulation and overall health is poor. The problem is with diabetics is that they tend to have "silent heart attacks" due to autonomic nerve damage.
I am not one to just give up on a person however.
I would:
a) Make sure blood sugars are being maintained.
b) Follow a strict low saturated fat diet, and incorporate GOOD heart healthy fats like salmon and olive oil. Also eat oatmeal, beans, and brown rice for fibre. Add flaxseed to your oatmeal in the am. Watch your portions if you need to lose weight.
c)Take any Rx cholesterol and BP lowering medication that the doctor has prescribed.
d.) If you have stable agina or shortness of breath, ask for a home oxygen tank. This will reduce the workload of the heart. Of course, still use your nitro patches and/or follow your doctors instructions (such as call 911 if your nitro spray does not help).
I would also ask for a consult with a cardiologist if you haven't had one already. Perhaps a stent may work for you, if you cannot have a bypass.

Here's a little different take on the subject of diabetes--
There are many things you can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.
Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:
Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate
If you are serious about not being falling victim to diabetes needlessly, get a copy of--
"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313
The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work--we both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what did it for me and mine. Best of luck.

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.
And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.

Your doctor should let you know what to expect.
