Be versitle and be prepared. One thing some ppl make as a mistake on, is over impressing. They work so hard on looking good, they forget to make the atmosphere pleasing and comfortable to the guest. If you are goin' to cook or pick a great caterer, make sure they are flexible with their dishes or cocktails and they are of course delicous! (different hor deouvres) are the best for social gathering, they are easy to handle and prepare and make bodies free to walk around. Plus great upbeat music in the background helps out alot. And your guest list is a big thing too: Do you know, lively ppl that you may want to invite as well, that the other don't know or do but never met? some one in their field, that love to teach as well? Some one who is great with groups? Also experience and ambience is more important than the actually food it self. (if you are in a dull atmospher, food would do anything to change that). So remember those three things: great food, great music, great lively guest list and your all set.

If it is a group of fun people you could do a theme such as 80s or even something classy such as Dessert Bar.
80s party - everyone must come in costume with big hair and crazy mtv shirts
the events at the party could be a 80 trival pursuit type game
simple food- such as mini pizzas

Dessert Bar
Have it be cocktail attire and every one bring their fav dessert from a bakery or homemade, then make it a buffet of desserts.
Pretty theme colors could be chocolate brown and mint green or chocolate brown and pink.

arrange the place--somewhere in your house or a rented
dining hall-- know how many seats (and tables)--select table
cloths--place cards (engraved or well printed) -- center pieces
If you can afford to hire a full dressed waiter or two do so.
(Holiday Inn and a few other hotel restaurants have carpeted
rooms with table clothed tables and let you plan the menu.)
A large roast beef Ala juice, sliced and served properly, preferably
from a moving large cart by a waiter, finger bowls, and a large flaming dessert usually set to impress. Perfection and elegance go hand in hand.
