A pulmonary embolism (plural emboli) is a clot in the lung. It usually, but not always, starts in a deep vein in the leg. A clot forms in the leg, and then somehow detaches itself, and travels up the vein to the heart. The clot, if it doesn't get lodged in the heart (heart attack), gets shot out and is forced into the lungs.
Clots form because of different factors. Having little movement in the legs because of illness, or sedentary life can cause a clot to form.
Surgeries and other injuries to the body can cause clots to form.
Some people have clotting factors that make their blood clot when it is not suppose to (I fall under this category).
I suffered a massive PE in 2004, and a second one 3 months later. It is nothing to play around with. If you or a loved one have suffered one, you must be very attentive to your body, and pick up signs of trouble.
If you have any additional questions about clots, as well as treating or preventing them, feel free to drop me an email.
God Bless,
Chris
