I've recently discovered how many foods contain gelatin, and are therefore not vegetarian. Does saltwater taffy have gelatin or is it something else that makes it chewy? I don't have the bag or I'd just read the label. Thanks!

William B:
Read the whole question please. Obviously there's no MEAT in taffy. I'm wondering if there is GELATIN in it (like there is in Starburst, gummi bears, etc), which is made by boiling dead carcasses. I wouldn't eat gelatin even if I DID eat meat. That's just gross!

Thanks Cinnamon. This is a "hand made" type... no name on the label. Guess I'll just forego it. Not a big taffy fan anyway... but I'm starving and it is sitting there. :) It's lunchtime now though... I'll be okay. :) Thanks.

Some recipes list gelatin as an ingredient. Others don't. I guess the only sure-fire way to know would be to look at the label. Since you don't currently have the label with you, maybe you could try looking up the ingredients online? If it's a famous brand, they should have a website for it online. :)

EDIT: Aimee, I think Laffy Taffy doesn't contain gelatin.

I have yet to come across any saltwater taffy that doesn't contain gelatin. And I totally agree with not wanting to eat gelatin, it is totally disgusting. If you have no label then it is better to be safe than sorry and stay away from it.
