and I have a really tight and stinging pain in my upper chest everytime I cough, which is every two minutes.

I've been avoiding the doctor cause I was hoping it's just mucus. But I don't feel anything breaking anymore and cough drops aren't helping.

what could that pain be? and what can I do? I don't want to go and spend 500$ at the doctors if I dont absolutley have to.

There is medicine for mucus that you can buy in the drugstore. However, after 2 days, you should see a Dr. You could have bronchitis which can damage your lungs.

Well, if you're still coughing and nothing is breaking up anymore then usually there is a problem. However, if you should have bronchitis then there is nothing a doctor can do other than prescribe a cough syrup with pain reliever in it.

[the following is from: http://www.medicinenet.com/bronchitis/page2.htm]

What Are the Symptoms?

The symptoms for acute bronchitis are:

Hacking cough.
Yellow, white, or green phlegm, usually appearing 24 to 48 hours after a cough.
Fever, chills.
Soreness and tightness in chest.
Some pain below breastbone during deep breathing
Some shortness of breath
The symptoms for chronic bronchitis are:

Persistent cough producing yellow, white, or green phlegm (for at least three months of the year, and for more than two consecutive years).
Sometimes wheezing, sometimes breathlessness.
Call Your Doctor If:

Your cough is so persistent or severe that it interferes with sleep or daily activities or leads to persistent chest pain; you could be damaging sensitive air sacs in your lungs.
Your symptoms last more than a week, and your mucus becomes darker and thicker, increases in volume, or turns bloody.
You display symptoms of acute bronchitis and have chronic lung or heart problems, or are infected with the virus that causes AIDS ; respiratory infections can leave you vulnerable to more serious lung diseases, such as pneumonia.
You have great difficulty breathing. This symptom, sometimes mistakenly associated with bronchitis, could signal asthma, emphysema, tuberculosis, heart disease, a serious allergic reaction, or cancer.

---

Now, when I had bronchitis I did NOT cough up any phlegm or mucuous of any kind. But I did hurt really badly every time I coughed. You may want to bite the bullet and get checked out.

To be quite honest with you, you could wait it out. However, It sounds as if you have a respiratory infection going on, quite possibly bronchitis. The thing that you need to be cautious of with bronchitis, is that if it is left untreated, and you symptoms are not getting better, or even getting worse, bronchitis can lead to pneumonia - which we all know is not a good thing. I understand that the doctor's office isn't the best idea right now, however, this may be one of those instances where you can call the doctor up and have him prescribe an antibiotic for you. Heaven forbid that the sickness doesn't progress, so if I were you, I'd give doc a call, and get an antibiotic.
The important thing to remember, and I tell this to all of my patients, when taking antibiotics, BE SURE to take all of the pills, EVEN IF your symptoms go away. If you don't, the possibilty of a worse infection can set in, that will be resistant to that antibiotiics, that we typically call a superinfection.

Hope this helped and you get feeling better!

--oh, and another thing, unless you really cannot function very well with your cough, you want to AVOID anti-tussive meds, such as Robutussin (cough relievers), because the cough is actually clearing out that infection, and that's a good thing.

Try Robitussin Cough and Flu. Dose up on it for a few days. If that doesn't work, see a doctor. We had a real bad case of Cedar Fever here not too long ago. That stuff seemed to help. It'll break it up, and it might help with the pain you're having. :)
Hope you feel better.
