Any cough medicine that has destromethorphan which is a cough suppressant. Guanafesin is an expectorant. Look at the ingredients in the back of the bottle. Generic medicines are cheaper so I always look at tht ingredients rather than the brand name. Robitussin is the most common brand name.
If you have a cough caused by cold or flu, you are better off not to use any cough medicine but rather an anthihistamine or/and a decongestant, as some of the over the counter cough medicines can be counterproductive.

There's been some debate about whether or not over-the-counter cough meds and the main active ingredient (dextro) really work. I think the medical community generally agrees that the most effective cough suppressant is hydrocodone or codeine. The main brands are Tussinex, Tussigon and Hycodan. If your cough has fallen into a cycle (i.e., your coughing is making you cough more) or your coughing is keeping you up at night, a good doc will prescribe it for you.
