what about the chance of getting an STD?
Or the chance of getting any type of infection?

It protects you from some but not all STDs. Some STDs can infect the areas of the body that touch that are not covered by the condom.... Genital Herpes and Genital Warts can be present in surrounding areas and still spread to ones partner.
"Correct and consistent use of male latex condoms reduces the risk of transmitting genital herpes, syphilis, and chancroid when the infected area or site of potential exposure is covered and protected." It is a physical barrier, and it lowers the chance, as you said of getting pregnant yeah, it lowers the chance of getting an STD or infections yes, unless the infection or the STD is in form of blisters or open wounds which fluids can come in contact with you... there, condoms won't work.

The condom will protect you from STD's and helps protect against pregnancy,and HIV.Nothing is 100% using safe sex practices and common sense will help increase the odds. SW RNP

they protect you from everything that you can get from sex. pregnancy, STIs
but they are not 100%. if used properly they are about 99.9% effective

if you have to ask you don't need to be having sex.
