Because the Tobacco Industry is strong. And the whole ATF (alcohol, tobacco and firearms) is weak Look at all the assault weapons being used in the commission of crimes. It's all a question of politics. They demand that they the Tobacco Industry have rights too. In "laissez faire." policy or free franchise that the gov't adopts! It's all a competitive busines market out for the big bucks.

However, they ban public smoking and TV and magazine advertisements. . How they went around this?. They got most actors smoking in the big screen and Marlboro is plastered right on the screen in plain view. No subtlety or subterfuge at all.

Thank God! Smokers are a minority now unlike yesteryears. And the nasty habit of smoking doesn't represent "coolness" anymore.

Because tobacco came on the scene long before anyone had ever done any kind of scientific studies that showed cigarettes cause cancer and are harmful to your health. Same thing with alcohol (being addictive causing drunkenness and potentially causing liver disease in large quantities), but they banned alcohol for awhile then brought it back because it was creating such a black market racket and the government would rather have the money rather than have the mob keep the money. So it is a matter of which is worse: having a black market in cigarettes with no benefit of tax money to the government, or having some people legally smoke cigarettes.

Do you really want the government to have that much control??? Wow, big brother is watching...

So then why not take away fast food too and candy shops and control portion sizes at restaurants and don't allow too much tanning or football, etc. Get my drift? Heroin is illegal, what more do you want?

But on the other hand I totally see your point and actually I agree with you. I would like to see cigarettes dissappear off the face of the earth. And I do think they've killed enough people that the government would have the right to step in and say that's enough.

But that really is opening up a big can of worms because alcohol would be the next to go and that would not go over well. People need their vices. It's just too bad that a lot of people can't handle using them responsibly.

In the first place, nobody knows how harmful it is. Do you know who the first tobacco consumer is? It's the indians. And the first people who sold tobacco? Well it's the cowboys. It is known to be harmful when they figured out about tar in the smoke. Nicotin is not harmful, only tar is. But by then, it's good business where over 60 percent of population smoke, and the tax received by the government is quite good, so no way that they're gonna stop cigarette from being produce.

The USA was the biggest Tabbaco leaf growers when they first got here. It wasn't only cotton the slaves were growing and picking. In fact I believe it was the biggest money maker at the time and probably still is. When I started smoking, we didn't know the long term affects it would have, nor did we know they were lacing it with drugs. Now we are addicted and most can't or don't want to give it up.

When they invented cigarettes they marketed as medicine that made you feel good. The high from the nicotine does that. But, like all stimulants it messes up you body if you take it long enough. Just compare the peoples faces of someone who had smoked for 10 years and one who has not.

Anyways, the simple truth is because people are gullible and we live in a capitalistic society.

Because the lovely government actually makes money from this, by putting a tax on cigarettes, and also the tobacco owners/lobbyists etc. have many politicians in the ir pockets, with more money, so that nothing new will be legislated against them.

Because people want it.

If drinking is bad, why sell it? The government tried to stop it through Prohibition but failed miserably. Lesson learned.

because its one of the united states biggest crops for domestic use and export. the world loves marlboros as much as it loves coca colas. we have to do something in this country other than run up credit cards so we grow tobacco and cure it and roll it up and smoke it ourselves or send it overseas.
