I am half Thai and although I live in the US I have experienced many Thai dishes. My advice is that if you like Chinese food you will like Thai food also. The basic dishes that are considered staples include fried rice (same as Chinese except with a stickier texture), Pad Thai (the most popular dish with noodles, nuts, and a tangy sauce), and Lad Na (also noodles with a thick gravy like sauce, meat, and broccoli). If you are new to Thai food I would suggest those dishes because noodle dishes are a major staple of Thai cooking.
Curries are good to look at if you like spice and you can even request mild or no spice and they are still very tasty. They come in different "colors" such as green, red, and yellow based on a different seasoning. I would consider those to be like a stir-fry with more sauce! YUM!
The important thing to remember in Thai cooking is to never request too spicy or else you will receive quite a shock! But as far as taste it is very much like Chinese food, but more flavor and flair! Give it a try! :)

Thai food is my favorite! It's not too far off from Chinese, so if you like Chinese food you'll like Thai (personally I think Thai better!) It's hard to describe how it tastes, Thai just has this really nice refreshing flavor. So since you're new to the world of Thai I would highly recomend ordering Pad Thai. It's not very strong but it's delicious, and probably the most well known Thai dish (it's my favorite!) It consists of stir-cryed rice noodles, small pieces of egg, peanuts (which are a big part of Thai food), and any combination of chicken or shrimp, somtimes there's bean sprouts or other vegies, all in a delicious sauce (which isn't the usual saucey-like texture) that you can usually order to you're desired heat. Some restraunts do it better than others so if you don't love it at first don't give up on Thai! But for people that are new to Thai I would defintly say order Pad Thai! It's the most popular Thai dish! Hope that helps!

Thailand (the Gulf of Thailand) is etched with hundreds of miles of rivers and canals, fish is a staple of the Thai diet. Fish sauce (nam pla) and/or shrimp paste (kapee) appear in nearly every recipe.
The other distinct flavors of Thai cooking come from the indigenous spices and produce: coconut milk, lemon grass, tamarind, ginger, black pepper, galangal, garlic, cilantro, basil, palm sugar, turmeric, cumin, shallots, and green onions.
Last but not least is the chile which has become a central player and much Thai food is fiery hot.
Thai food is either stir-fried or steamed -- primarily in a wok. Some foods are grilled, but, as in the rest of the region, a lack of fuel precludes baking. Chiles and other spices are ground into powder or paste with mortar and pestle or with a coffee grinder.
Thai food is a blend of Indian and Chinese influences but is distinctive in itself with an explosion of exquisite flavors and tastes which go very well with Thailand's very own fragrant white rice. Boiled white rice is not a side dish but central to a Thai meal as Thai cuisine do not have main courses as such.

Thai food is an acquired taste. Most dishes have strong taste that hits your tastebuds, in a nice way. Tangy, sourish, sweet, spicy and hot. Lots of garden herbs are used, the most common being, basil, curry leaves, mint, lemon grass, and different types of ginger. Simply exotic and I love it.

It's hard to describe. The curries taste like Indian and Chinese. Some dishes taste like Chinese exclusively. You really won't know unless you try it yourself.

Kind of like asking what American food tastes like.
American food tastes like pizza, hamburgers, corn-on-the-cob, roast beef, pork chops, broccolli, sushi, chop suey, tacos, venison, adobo, spring rolls, croissants and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
The only way to KNOW what Thai food tastes like is to eat some!
Yummm!

Depends what you get. They use a lot of curries and peanut sauces. They also use a lot of Tamarind which is kind of tangy. Its kind of like Chinese meets indian.
