Angina ("angina pectoris") is the medical name for pain in the chest.
It's usually caused by thickening of the arteries that supply blood to the heart, so the heart doesn't get enough oxygen or nutrients.
Because of this, attacks are often brought on because of exercise, stress, extreme cold and eating a large meal. These are all things that make the heart work harder.
Have a look at netdoctor's page on angina -- it tells you a lot more about causes plus how to help minimise the effects.
I hope your grandad makes a quick recovery: good luck.

I'm sure in 5 answers someone has already said this but...angina is the pain caused by blood clots blocking the passageway of blood through the arteries that are bringing oxygenated blood to the heart. That pain is a warning sign. The more frequent attacks he gets, the more likely he is to have a heart attack soon. People take nitrogycerine tabets under the tongue to relieve this They are actually not pain pills, but vaso-dilators...they open up the blood vessels so that the blood can get through to the heart. They need to be taken immediately upon feeling the chest pain (angina) and if it is not relieved in two more pills over the next 6 minutes, then you call 911.

I think bflogal 77 is trying to frighten you to death. Angina is NOT caused by blood clots. That is called coronary thrombosis and normally kills you. Restriction on the arteries surrounding the heart can cause chest pains, or angina. That is why sufferers are given a GTN, glycerol tri-nitrate, spray or tablets. Placed under the tongue, it expands the blood vessels, reduces the pressure on your heart and the pain should vanish within a couple of minutes.

Angina is a pain that comes from the heart. It is common in people over the age of 50. Sometimes it occurs in younger people. It is more common in men than women. This leaflet is about the common type of angina which is caused by narrowing in the coronary arteries of the heart. (Angina is sometimes caused by uncommon disorders of the heart valves or heart muscle.)

ymptoms of angina include a heaviness or tightness, not necessarily pain, in the center of the chest which may spread to the arms, back, even the neck or face.
Other symptoms of angina may start in the stomach and feel like indigestion, or they may include a headache, light headedness and shortness or breath.
This interference is often associated with diet and weight. Both for treatment and for prevention work with your dad to help him eata healthy diet and keep his weight down.

Damage to the arteries....namely narrowing of furring....thus slowing the blood flow through the body...usually around the heart.
Many causes for this, such as smoking, eating junk food and lack of exercise are a few.
Hope your grandad is ok.
