Vegans don't eat eggs because they are from animals. Many vegans disagree with eating animal products for various reasons- the strain that animal farming puts on the planet, the conditions the animals are kept in etc. Others think that eating an egg is like killing a potential chicken- which of course is wrong as the eggs we eat are unfertillised. It's like saying you're killing a potential human everytime you get rid of a sanitary towel!

I guess some do so because of the cruelty to Chickens in battery and supermarket-led "free range" farms, which are nothing more than battery farms in the open air. The chickens they use a a cross, normally between Roade Island Red and Buffs to give a, egg laying machine that is killed at 1 year old and pumped full of hormone laced food.
Many vegetarians avoid milk for similar objection to the death of bull dairy calves.and the way the cows are treated.
The definition of a vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat, fish, poultry or slaughter by-products.
All the known vegetarian societies use this defintion.
An unfertilised egg will never be a life so that is an arguement based on a falsehood.
I'm veggie, i eat eggs from our free range hens that, to be honest, have a better life than me.
Adam, when you say "My mum is a vegetarian because she doesn't agree with animal cruelty, but is not against the principle of eating meat. She has started to eat "cruelty -free" meat and eats fish and dairy" I assume you mean "my mum used to be a vegetarian"
Steph d, feel free to find the truth before posting, it looks so much better than guessing !

I eat eggs, but I have my own chickens. Before I got them, and after going vegetarian, I only bought free-range eggs.
To the people who said "because it would have become a chicken"... that's usually not true. Commercial egg farms do not produce fertilized eggs. Chickens will lay whether there is a rooster around or not... and the conditions in most factory egg farms are not conducive to natural breeding.
I think the MAIN reason why VEGETARIANS don't eat eggs is because of the cruelty involved with the production of them. (Vegans don't eat anything that came from an animal. Period.) Have you ever been by an egg farm? It's pretty gross. Chickens are shoulder to shoulder in wire cages. Some are pecked to death, others are malformed because of broken legs/wings due to the wire confinement. Their beaks are usually seared off to avoid injury to other birds. Each day's HEAP of dead birds (those who couldnt' take it any longer) get piled up outside the doors to be disposed of with a big tractor.
At least free-range chickens have a decent life (presumably). Although the only way to be certain, is to have your own.

Some vegetarians don't eat eggs because of the cruelty to animals involved with battery hens. Most vegetarians will only eat non-battery eggs, so not barn eggs either because that means nothing, meaning that most vegetarians who eat eggs will only eat free-range organic eggs.
I saw a woman in a supermarket the other day with a Louis Vuitton handbag buying Moet et Chandon champagne, a pile of other stuff and economy eggs. The temptation to key her car was almost irrestible. Decent eggs are really not that much more. Not when you're buying the things she was at any rate.

I guess it's because the egg would have turned into a living animal. I'm a vegetarian and do eat eggs, but only free range but i still feel guilty.

Same reason why some carnivores don't eat gammon - they just don't like it!
Some veggies just do not like the thought of eating animal products, which would include eggs. Add to this the fact that hens might not be kept in humane conditions, its a good reason not to eat eggs.
Obviously Vegans do not eat eggs as they are dairy.

Vegetarians who eat milk and eggs are often referred to a Lacto-ovo-vegetarians.
A lot of vegetarians believe that it is wrong to use animal by-products such as leather, or to eat animal products such as milk and eggs, as the animals are exploited to obtain these.
To produce cows milk requires the cow to have had a calf, which is then removed so that she continues to lactate - and is milked. The calves are usually sent for veal production if they are males or used to replace old stock if a female or killed. The cow has to have a calf every year - this is exploitation.
The chickens are are kept apart from the cockrels and their natural laying instinct is exploited by continually removing the eggs. The hen lays eggs until it either dies from poor health, or becomes too old to lay and is killed - this is exploitation.

Some people are vegetarian for different reasons.
I have a friend who is vegetarian because its a religious pre-requisite.
My mum is a vegetarian because she doesn't agree with animal cruelty, but is not against the principle of eating meat. She has started to eat "cruelty -free" meat and eats fish and dairy.
I have another friend to is vegetarian because he was bought up that way and simply cannot eat meat.
I have another Friend to is vegetarian because God told him to stop eating meat.
It all depends on why their a vegetarian.

Some vegetarians don't eat any products that come from animals so no eggs or cheese or milk. These people are known as vegans. I don't think I could go through life with no cheese.
