Tuinal was a barbiturate combination of amobarbital and secobarbital used in the 50's and 60's as a sleeping medication and to relieve anxiety. There were largely replaced in the early 1970's by the introduction of Valium and some other benzodiazepines.
Barbiturates are fairly dangerous drugs and are metabolized in the liver similarly to alcohol, so for a while they were used to prevent alcoholic withdrawal, but barbiturates are also addictive and have even worse physical effects in some people
It was a great party drug if you wanted your guests to go to sleep after about 15 minutes, otherwise it caused more troubles than it was worth!
The drug was removed from the market and is considered without legitimate reason to use any longer. It is also illegal to possess it, so if you have some get rid of it, it is out of date anyway!

Tuinals. They came in gelatin capsules, red at one end and blue at the other.

I don't know when they came out, but people I knew were using them as recreational drugs in the '70s.
