My 22year old niece has suffered from asthma and constant chest infections all her life. Antibiotics don't work anymore. Her doctor said she had the lungs of a much older woman. Does this mean her health is going to shorten her life?

It is not guaranteed but there is a chance it will shorten her life. Severe asthma can lead to emphysema which is uncurable and shortens some peoples lives (in others it only reduces the quality of life). It definetly leads to more infections and it is these infections that actually end up taking your life, so if she starts to get sick she needs to get into the doctor immediately - asthma can make a simple cold into pneumonea.

Yes you need lungs to survive and lung surgery may not be a option.Go see a specialist doctor in lungs. The scaring that she is getting from all the infections on her lungs are really bad.She might be able to grow more tissue that is healthy if she can stop getting infections. She may have to move to a better climate for her lungs to stay alive. She is still young and could recover some what. But will never be like some one that did not have all the problems.

It doesnot mean that it will shorten her life but as she gets over 60 things will defenately start getting harder..Walking can become a problem if you cant breathe well...Try using Menthol crystals in hot water in her room, this should cartainly help the chest problems that she has.I suffer from asthma, bronchitus, and have constant infections....I find menthol the best way.....Moving out of the city and into the country has helped me alot as well, but unless that is possisble then keep going..Hope she keeps fit and well........

She needs to speak to a specialist to get advice about how to improve her condition and prevent or slow any worsening of her lungs.

Gentle sports, especially swimming, can help strengthen lungs a great deal.

My son has asthma and I was told that exercise can help to strengthen your lungs, his condition does seem to have improved somewhat.

no shouldn't. if the doctor knew this would happen, he has to tell you this info. I think the medication should help. if not ask the gp for something else.
