I had keyhole surgery to fix my hiatus hernia in February last year. It was called a Laporoscopic Fundoplication. This involves making a cut in the upper abdomen, pushing the stomach back into the correct position and securing it there, and then repairing any gap of the diaphragm. I am completely over the moon that I went ahead with it as it has made such a difference for me. i can eat foods now that i couldn't before. I can sleep without waking up, feeling sick. I don't have to rely on taking tablets every day. I know that alot of people dimiss this op saying that it might not work but in my case it most definitely has worked and i would not change that for the world and would reccomend it to anyone. i put up with it for over 15 yrs and am so glad to wake up every morning now and not feel ill and in pain. I personally didn't find wearing or not wearing a bra made any difference. symptoms as far as i was concerned would be reflux, especially if you bent down for any reason, constant burning chest pain(heartburn), inability to eat anything acidic as this would aggravate the pain and sickness. General unwell feeling hard to describe.

A hiatus hernia is a physical rupture of you diaphragm. not a chemically curable condition. Sooner or later, it will either heal itself or you will require surgical intervention. One of the things that the diaphragm does is to separate areas of differing pressure in your body. That being so, a smoker's cough is something that you really don't want. Alcohol will diminish the chances of a natural healing. It could be that your current lifestyle is partly to blame for your hernia. You will find that a generally healthier lifestyle would be of all round benefit - after all, how do you know if you've had a good time if you can't remember it the following day?

The surgery is not always very sucessful. My mum had it done a number of years ago. She ended up almost dying (post op complications) and was 2 months in hospital. She was unlucky to a certain degree but I have seen other patients who have not been very pleased with the results. Conservative management is often better, the surgery is major and very traumatising;

Surgery may not always be neccessary. sometimes you can regulate your hiatus hernia and decrease heartburn by changing your diet. But most likely it could cause discomfort if you wear a bra after the surgery. Please check the website listed below for more information.

i have a hiatus hernia,(male) i have heard the op will not cure the pain. just be careful of what you eat and eat it slowly and small amounts at a time. find out what gives you the pain and try to avoid it.
