India food is awesome and if you get a Hindu based on they shoud all be vegetarian reciepies.
As for cook books, the local library is the best place to start.
Get the books out cook a couple and write down other reciepes that you think you will like.
As for ingredients that you've never heard of, well I got one like that a few years ago. As it turned out it was an Australian book and things like egg plants, zucchini, kumars were all things you get in the UK but with different names.
Egg Plant - Aubergine
Zucchini - Courgettes
Kumar - Sweet potatoes

Use google to find out what they are.

PS - While your at the library have a look to see if they have DVD's for rent. Mine has some great ones and its better giving your money to the library that b***kbusters!!

There is no need to limit yourself, especially as a new vegetarian. Vegetarian cookbooks can seem quite overwhelming. I personally use regular cookbooks, and I substitute anything I cannot eat with things I can eat.

Also, because you are young, new to this lifestyle and (I assume) dependent on your parents grocery shopping for your needs, I suggest using recipes that are common in your house. If your parent is cooking a dish with meat, s/he can make a separate little pot for you where no meat is included. If you are cooking for yourself, you can start with the simple dishes you are used to; that way, nothing is confusing.

If your parents are understanding, you can ask for tofu and vegetarian "meats" when they go shopping. You can use these instead of any meat in your normal cookbooks. If these are too expensive, just dig through their veggie supply and add those to your normal dishes. Frozen veggies are cheap, and they contain the necessary nutrients. I can't imagine any parent being annoyed their child is asking for more vegetables.

It will be great for you to find and experiment with vegetarian cookbooks, but I find it can be a lot easier for beginners to work with what they are used to. This way you will also not feel as though you are "missing out" on something because you do not share your family's diet, and you will not be overwhelmed by any ingredients or recipes.

:)

Check out Deborah Madison cookbooks. She's highly regarded. I gave one as a birthday gift to a vegetarian friend and he loved it! I think the Moosewood cookbooks are also vegetarian. At least some of them.

The Rebar Modern Food Cookbook is excellent. It's got huge sections for pastas, soups and salads, plus easy recipes you can make and pack in a lunchbox. It's also got some fancy entrees if you're having company over, as well as easy baked goods and basics like bread and sauces. A great thing about it is that it also has a few recipes that use shrimp or salmon if you're eating with non-vegetarians, plus it has loads of ideas on how to turn vegetarian recipes into vegan ones. You can buy it on Amazon or at the link below.

I agree is Johnny Depp Lova.
The book is actually The Vegetarian Little Big Book published by McRae Books. I picked it up at Border's and It's my favorite also. All the recipes are tasty with minimal ingredients. VERY easy prep.
