I've been vegetarian since August 29th. It was kind of confusing...obviously you can eat vegetables.
There are actually different types of vegetarians. When I totally cut out meats from my diet, I got sick, tired...it wasn't good. So I only ate seafood and vegetables. I think it's called being a procto-vegetarian? When the only "meat" you eat is seafood. I'm not quite sure on the terminology.
This site has tons of foods vegetarians can eat. Muy helpful.

But if you keep getting sick, it might be because of protein deficiency...or maybe being a vegetarian just isn't right for you.
If it's because you're trying to lose weight [some people think that not eating meat will make them instantly skinnier], I would recommend that you stop trying to be veggie and just eat less...exercise...yada yada.
But if it's for animal rights...etc...either go procto-vegetarian [like me] or ask a doctor about it.

Yay! I am a vegatarian too! I've been for about a year now. At first I really didn't know what to eat and all, it was hard to turn down a juicy steak, but after a few weeks I got used to it. Here's what I think you should know.
Well, first and quite obviously, you can't eat any meat. This can present some problems, but mostly benefits. Red meat is NOT good for you, it contains a lot of ucky things it didn't used to and your body doesn't want it. Also, with or without pesticides and GMOS, red meat contains saturated fat and other things that aren't great for you, even when it is organic or natural. Anyway, the problems with not eating meat are not getting enough iron, protein, etc. But you can fill in these gaps with beans (cook them to remove any harmful toxins), eggs (no more than three a week), and protein and iron enriched foods. Thomas bagels have 11 grams of protein in each, and many healthy cereals like smart Start are fortified with iron. Other then this, you can get some iron supplement vitamins at your grocery store to fill in any gaps.
Since you are a veggie now, you are going to want to be eating more fruits and vegatables and beans and non-meat products to fill in the holes from the no-meat-ness. For your veggies, eat at least three cups a day, mostly dark green and bright orange ones. Fruit, at least two cups a day, don't leave out any peels or skins. For fruits and vegatables, try to choose organic and locally grown foods. These are better for the environment as well as better for you!
As for your getting sick, I don't know what is causing it, but make sure you are drinking a lot of water and start taking a vitamin C supplement from the grocery store. Vegatarian or not, these are great ways to keep from geting sick.

a vegetarian diet will not make you sick.
An unbalanced diet will make you sick
You just need to eat a sensible mix of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, cereals, dairy.
Ignore all the "you need meat" answers, its rubbish. I've been veggie for 27 years and never had any problems. To be honest, i don't even think about food, i just eat a sensible balance.
If you are relying on salad, you'll get sick.
If you rely on fake-meat, you'll get sick.
Eat real food, not convinience food.
That is, however, advice for everyone, not just veggies.
Our veggie B&B was full last night. The breakfast table was stacked with food this morning. Its'll last them all day so there is no reason to blame a veggie diet for your health.
Lets be clear: Halifax Hei has not been a veggie since August 29th. They have cut out red meat and poultry. Thats it. A vegetarian doesn't eat seafood. Simple as that.

I assume you're in the UK, not USA, so...
You can eat everything you ate before, but look for veggie protein alternatives to meat (eg, Quorn, the Linda McCartney range, most supermarkets do their own range). You'll find pies, burgers, sausages, all sorts of ideas.
You can make things like spag bol/ chilli/ shepherd's pie with veggie mince
Or curries with Quorn pieces instead of chicken pieces.
If you are being strictly veggie, look out for some of these amongst the ingredients:
gelatine, lecithin (unless it says soya lecithin), animal fats.
None of these are suitable for vegetarians.
I can't think why you're getting sick all the time, are you eating junk stuff like chips and crisps?
Try eating some fruit, veg, nuts to snack on.
And always look for the "V" symbol when buying food!!

When you're sick, you should try to eat what you can keep down(if that's a problem for you!). Soup is good(veggie stocks). Tea/herbal tea is nice when you're not feeling well. I find licorice root tea and mint tea to be very refreshing when I'm under the weather. Stay away from spicy things.
Oranges/orange juice/citrus of any kind is good for the nutrients. Try not to push it when you're ill. Stay away from a lot of milk/dairy products when you're stuffy(they can cause excess mucus formation). Small amounts should be okay, just don't overdo it. I'm vegan but yogurt/soy yogurt can be help in general due to the "active cultures"! Good luck...you're right, being sick sucks!

weel it depends on whether you are a complete vegan, which means you only eat fruits, vegetables, nuts and such or if you are the kind that eats eggs and dairy products also. in that case, you should eat things with a lot of fiber, which you can get from your fruits. Becasue youre not eating meat, youre not getting your normal amount of protein, so you may want to think about protein shakes or some sort of vitamin supplements. if you continue to be sick though, maybe its just not for you. or go talk to a nutritionist. hope it helps

vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, and make sure you are getting protein in your diet because you may be getting sick from not getting any. try peanut butter and yogurt. both are good sources of protein. some vegetarians eat fish and some eat chicken. it depends on what kind you are. also, some don't eat gelatin which is in jello, fluff, and lots of gummy candy and fruitsnacks. i would decide first what kind of vegetarian you want to be. if you keep getting sick i would go talk to a nutritionist who can help you know what to eat.

please don't listen to all these "funny" guys telling you to eat steak / bacon etc. its perfectly possible to follow a veggie diet and stay healthy - i'm proof - 23 years veggie!! just make sure you try to keep your diet balanced, plenty of fresh fruit & veg, and be sure to replace your protein with other sources - nuts, pulses etc (mmm chickpeas!) but just because you cut out meat it doesn't mean u have 2 be 2 healthy & dull u are allowed to eat junk sometimes - no-one should ever have to give up chocolate!!

A lot of vegetarians experience illness. Without protein (meat) and the nourishment you get from meat, your body doesn't heal as quickly. I would suggest that you add a little bit of chicken or fish to your diet. If you won't eat meat, then perhaps at least a little bit of broth - chicken broth or beef stew broth (just take the meat out). Honestly, the best thing for your body would be a big steak - all of that protein and iron will help. Also consult your doctor, because you don't get all the vitamins and amino acids you need from vegetables.
Also, if you are eating veggies go for the ones with lots of deep or rich color. More hue (intensity of the color) indicates that the veggie is more nutritious. Example: dark, green leafy spinach is much more nutritious than plain iceberg lettuce.
