it is known that antispcyhotics sometimes cause diabetes.

Well, if the patient ALREADY has diabetes, would it be safe for them to use an antipsychotic?

How about benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin etc)? Is it safe for a diabetic to use those drugs?

Please only reply if you have knowledge of this and can help.

I used to take Zyperxa, and i would not recomened it for a diabetic. I am a totally healthy 21 year old women and it raised my blood sugar. It makes you crave sweets very bad. I dont see how this could be healthy for some one that already had problems with their blood sugars.

I cannot fully speak for a diabetic but I am a hypo and have taken benzodiazepines and many others that are to cause or heighten the chance of diabetes. Because of my hypo state I was quite worried about taking the meds. My personal experience was that I did get sick and found it very hard to control my levels, while talking to my dr I asked about diabetics. Seeing is how my SO is diabetic.
What he told me was that from his experience the diabetics reacted similar to how i did which was get sick and have more work controlling levels or no reaction at all.
Honestly though that DR wasn't always the most reliable. I would recommend talking to both your pysch and your endo. first.

Remember many pyschs are based off of poisons.. so most likely all should be discussed with your endo.

good luck with everything :)

They are being prescribed. You might have to increase your diabetes medicine. I have read that some psychiatrists are prescribing Glucophage/metformin along with these drugs to counteract the diabetes.
