It means they are not from an animal

The actual materials are most likely to be vegan (although producers are not beyond lying on their labelling, as mentioned above the downside of fake leathers etc being so realistic now!)

It probably isn't vegan though - most shoes are glued together with an animal based glue, and it's only really those from specialist vegetarian / vegan shoe producers that make a point of avoiding this. Having said that it isn't always possible to buy from such specialist retailers and a number of my fellow vegans have shoes from such sources, simply because they can't get a vegan version. If you're looking to be as animal friendly as possible though, man-made or synthetic is definitely the way to go!

No harm in asking the manufacturers!

"Man is made in God's Image and Likeness" not just Image. There is no shape or form for that since God is formless from the beginning. The only logical things you can attached to that is His teachings which is for man to live in"Righteousness and Justice". This is because of unexplained reasons why is it that for every man's deed, a certain consequence happens, some kind of blessings when what you do is good and right or some kind of curse is when you do some wicked things. Of course, there is also a time we see wicked people seem to be more blessed than a good person you see suffering. Well, that could be a product of your free will where you make a choice to be wise and move on or stay stagnant and ignorant. The "Burning Bush"? it is not really a fire that may consume the bush but it is more of reflection of man being enlightened. Maybe you have experienced some kind of light in your surroundings when you are in love or when you excel in some difficult assignment or when you discover something that excites your whole being. That is how man can see God,... through the light in your mind's eye for no one has seen God visually and live. Yes, it is some kind of "energy".... Force is too strong a word for me.

That's what it's supposed to mean! Unfortunately on several occasions I've come across items labeled that way that couldn't pass the "hot needle" test.

How do you perform a "hot needle" test to tell what something is *really* made out of? Firstly; Don't try it in the store! Take a needle (I use a safety pin since they're easier to hold and don't burn my fingers so quickly) and heat the tip to glowing with a small flame (like from a lighter or match) and touch the glowing tip to an inconspicuous area of the item. Sniff the smoke that comes from the heated material. If the smoke smells like burnt animals it IS animal material! Man-made stuff will smell like burning plastic or vegetable materials!

I've come across one pair of shoes from Payless with a bad label.
An end table trimmed with "faux leatherette" from Pier 1 released a *strong* odor of lamb!
Quite a few different items from Wal-Mart.
Over the years I've noticed that items with origin labels from India and Bangladesh seem to be the most likely to be mis-labeled.

I would suggest you testing your boots by applying the needle just above the point where the sole meets the heel since very few folks ever notice a small 'scar' in this area.

And I *never* trust the label!!

You bought pleather (pretend leather). It does not have animal origins and is vegan.

That is exactly what it means. Kudos to you for buying that over leather!

Anything man made is non-leather, so you're fine. "Synthetic" is another keyword to look for.
